Description

Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Riserva Montestefano 2021 is one of the most characteristic and long-lasting wines of the Montestefano vineyard, often called the “Barolo among Barbaresco”. This cru is famous for its southwest-facing slopes and calcareous clay soils, which give the ‘Nebbiolo’ grapes special concentration, structure and ripening potential. The 2021 harvest in the Barbaresco region is considered one of the most successful harvests of the last decade, characterized by excellent grape ripeness, refreshing acidity and exceptional balance.

The aroma reveals notes of black cherries, ripe plums, dried rose petals, licorice and forest herbs. As the wine opens in the glass, leather, tobacco, menthol, black spices and subtle mineral nuances characteristic of this legendary Barbaresco vineyard emerge.

The wine is powerful, concentrated and multi-layered. Firm yet precise tannins, lively acidity and a long, complex finish.

The Montestefano vineyard is one of the most prestigious Barbaresco crus, producing wines with greater power and concentration than many other areas in the region. It is for this reason that Montestefano is often compared to the best Barolo vineyards.

The wine is made from 100% ‘Nebbiolo’ grapes and is aged for 36 months in large traditional oak barrels, followed by additional bottle aging.

Serving recommendations

James Suckling

Youthful on the nose, showing bright, lively aromas of red and dark fruits, leafy lightness, wild strawberries and black cherries with a whiff of blood oranges and earthy, chocolaty depth. The gorgeous full-bodied palate, structured and extracted, has firm, velvety tannins and tense acidity, leading to a balanced, endless, licorice finish. March 2026 release. Drink or hold.

About brand

Produttori del Barbaresco, founded in 1958, now has 51 members and controls more than 100 hectares of premium Nebbiolo vineyards in Barbaresco. Each family is in full control of its land, growing Nebbiolo grapes with centuries old skill and dedication. The vinery produces a Barbaresco DOCG, a blend of Nebbiolo grapes harvested from different vineyards, and a simpler Nebbiolo Langhe suited for earlier consumption. In great vintages, nine single-vineyard Barbarescos are produced from nine classic premium sites within the Barbaresco village boundaries: Asili, Rabajà, Pora, Montestefano, Ovello, Pajè, Montefico, Muncagota, and Rio Sordo. These are the geographical names of sites where Nebbiolo grapes have always been cultivated. The name of the single-vineyards, the total number of bottles produced, and the name of the owners of the vineyards are marked on the labels. Produttori del Barbaresco, which vinifies only Nebbiolo grapes, produce around 550 000 bottles per year. In a good vintage they are divided among Barbaresco (50%), single vineyard Barbarescos (30%) and Nebbiolo Langhe (20%).
