Red dry
Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Riserva Ovello 2021 is one of the most structured and long-lasting wines of the Produttori del Barbaresco Riserva series, born in the prestigious Ovello cru. This vineyard is the northernmost part of the Barbaresco appellation, where the cooler microclimate and calcareous clay soils allow ‘Nebbiolo’ to maintain an exceptional balance of acidity and tannins. Ovello wines are renowned for their great aging potential and aristocratic structure.
The aroma reveals notes of dried rose petals, cherries, cranberries, licorice, forest floor and tobacco. As the wine opens in the glass, menthol, star anise, black spices and subtle earthy nuances that are characteristic of the best Ovello wines emerge.
The wine is rich and concentrated. The fruitiness of ripe cherries, strawberries and plums is complemented by lively acidity, firm yet elegantly integrated tannins and a long mineral finish. Ovello is both powerful and graceful – a wine that needs time to fully reveal its complexity.
The wine is made from 100% ‘Nebbiolo’ grapes and is aged for 36 months in large traditional oak barrels, followed by additional bottle ageing. This classic winemaking method preserves the authentic terroir character of Ovello and ensures exceptional longevity.
Serve at 16-18 °C. Food pairing: braised veal, lamb loin, venison, truffle-flavored pasta, wild mushroom risotto, mature hard cheeses.
Restrained if not austere, showing dark fruit, earthy tones and cherries with almost wild blackberries and a whiff of blood oranges. Full-bodied. The attack is dense and velvety with thick, firm tannins that are dusty yet ripe. Powerful but well-balanced at the end, with a mouth-coating texture. March 2026 release, but will need another year or two to be ready to drink.
Produttori del Barbaresco, founded in 1958, now has 51 members and controls more than 100 hectares of premium Nebbiolo vineyards in Barbaresco. Each family is in full control of its land, growing Nebbiolo grapes with centuries old skill and dedication. The vinery produces a Barbaresco DOCG, a blend of Nebbiolo grapes harvested from different vineyards, and a simpler Nebbiolo Langhe suited for earlier consumption. In great vintages, nine single-vineyard Barbarescos are produced from nine classic premium sites within the Barbaresco village boundaries: Asili, Rabajà, Pora, Montestefano, Ovello, Pajè, Montefico, Muncagota, and Rio Sordo. These are the geographical names of sites where Nebbiolo grapes have always been cultivated. The name of the single-vineyards, the total number of bottles produced, and the name of the owners of the vineyards are marked on the labels. Produttori del Barbaresco, which vinifies only Nebbiolo grapes, produce around 550 000 bottles per year. In a good vintage they are divided among Barbaresco (50%), single vineyard Barbarescos (30%) and Nebbiolo Langhe (20%).
