The 2021 Riesling Ried Kögl 1ÖTW opens with a clear, bright, fresh and elegant, pure and flinty but also intensely fruity bouquet of ripe and stewed white and yellow stone fruits as well as notes from crushed stones. Elegant and lush on the palate, this is a full-bodied, dense and aromatic Riesling with a savory finish, yet it's a bit watery and lacks the concentration and substance of a cru. It's a good, stimulating and refreshing dry Riesling that will probably gain some complexity with bottle age yet not substance. 13.5% stated alcohol. Screw-cap closure. Tasted at the domaine in September 2022. Drink date: 2022 - 2036.

Light greenish yellow, silver reflections. Inviting bouquet of mango and greengage, a hint of orange jelly, soft notes of floral honey. Good complexity, juicy, tight-knit, white vine peach, mineral-lemon, fine tobacco spice on the finish, versatile style.

About brand

Two hemispheres. From north to south. The Salmon Estate family story is a winemaking journey unparalleled in the world. Bert Salomon is a seventh-generation descendant of the great Austrian wine dynasty Salomon Undhof, renowned since 1792 for creating the finest Rieslings and Gruner Veltliners from the Kremstal region west of Vienna. In the 1980s he also pioneered the importation of Australian wines to his homeland. Bert’s wife Gertrud forged a successful management career with international cosmetics firm L’Oreal before choosing to throw her considerable professional passion into the world of her husband’s wines. Both have a love for great red wine and diverse cultures, which brought them to Australia hoping to broaden their horizons and find the perfect place for a vineyard to satisfy their wanderlust. As they searched, they fell in love with the landscape around the Finniss River district on South Australia’s southern Fleurieu Peninsula, and after meticulous terroir-based research settled on a site that became their southern-hemisphere home. While their children Fay Marie and Bert Michael increasingly take on the family’s custodianship of their Austrian estate, Bert and Gertrud now concentrate more and more on their Australian endeavour, assisted by an “extended” family of winemaking mates like Mark Farmilo,  long-time friend and former chief red winemaker at Penfolds, and current winemaker and vineyard manager Simon White, formerly head winemaker at Coriole and Hardy’s Tintara in nearby McLaren Vale.
