Armand Heitz Pommard Premier Cru Les Rugiens 2020

115,00

Description

Les Rugiens is widely regarded as the most prestigious Premier Cru vineyard in Pommard and is often cited as one of the strongest arguments for granting the appellation Grand Cru status. Its iron-rich red clay soils over a limestone base give Pinot Noir not only remarkable concentration but also a distinctive mineral tension. Armand Heitz farms this vineyard according to biodynamic principles, aiming to express not the traditional power of Pommard, but a precise and balanced interpretation of its terroir.

The 2020 vintage combines ripe fruit with excellent freshness. The bouquet is led by aromas of black cherry, blackberry and plum, complemented by violet petals, black pepper, graphite, iron and delicate smoky nuances. With aeration, additional layers of liquorice, forest floor and subtle spice emerge, adding further depth and complexity.

On the palate, the wine displays the classic character of Les Rugiens—a dense structure supported by remarkable precision and balance. A concentrated core of dark fruit is framed by vibrant acidity and firm yet fine-grained tannins, giving the wine clear definition and outstanding ageing potential. The long finish is marked by notes of black berries, minerality, spice and subtle earthy nuances.

The grapes are harvested by hand and fermented using a minimal-intervention approach. The wine is then aged for approximately 14 months in French oak barrels, with only a restrained proportion of new oak, allowing the vineyard's character and the purity of the fruit to remain at the forefront.

Serving recommendations

Best served at 16 °C, paired with slow-roasted beef short ribs, venison medallions, black truffle risotto, and aged Tomme de Savoie cheese.

Inside Burgundy

Picked on 27th August, 25% new wood, 75% whole bunch. A deeper and more dour purple. The bouquet is sultry with dark fruit, just a little bit congested at the moment. Sweetly ripe then punchily fresh from the stems. Fair weight, though this is evidently an upper Rugiens, with some floral notes more evident towards the finish. Not in place but with fair potential. Tasted Oct 2021.

About brand

Armand Heitz – Burgundy wines from Chassagne-Montrachet

Armand Heitz is a biodynamic Burgundy wine estate based in Chassagne-Montrachet, actively producing wine under its own name since 2013. After completing his studies in Switzerland and several years of practical experimentation, Armand gradually took over the historic family vineyards, which for many years had been leased to Maison Drouhin, returning them to independent, terroir-focused winemaking.

Working closely with Ludovic Pierrot, long-time winemaker at Domaine Leflaive, Armand Heitz pursues a clear objective: to craft classically styled Burgundy wines where place, aromatic purity, and structural balance take precedence over technique. His philosophy aligns with benchmarks such as Domaine Leflaive and Domaine Ramonet—not through imitation, but through shared values and direction.

The estate follows biodynamic viticulture, prioritising low yields, soil vitality, and natural balance. Oak usage is deliberately restrained, with approximately 15–25% new barrels, ensuring clarity of texture and a transparent aromatic profile rather than overt oak expression.

Wine style

Armand Heitz wines are defined by balance and a clear sense of origin.
White wines show distinct minerality, full yet precise texture, pure aromatics, and finely integrated oak.
Red wines are aromatic and juicy, with polished tannins and a dominant red-berry profile, achieved without excessive extraction.

Prestigious vineyards

The estate owns historic Burgundy vineyards, some acquired as early as 1857, including several of the region’s most renowned sites:

  • Meursault 1er Cru Perrières

  • Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Têtes de Clos

  • Montrachet Grand Cru

  • Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru

  • Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens

  • Volnay 1er Cru Les Taillepieds

These are complemented by smaller but distinctive parcels in Chassagne-Montrachet, Meursault, and Pommard, allowing for a broad and nuanced interpretation of Burgundy terroirs.

Ageing and drinking potential

A key strength of Armand Heitz Burgundy wines is their early approachability without sacrificing ageing potential. The wines are well balanced and enjoyable upon release, while their structural integrity and natural acidity allow them to develop gracefully over time.
