Chateau Picque Caillou Pessac-Leognan 2022

Description

A Pessac-Léognan red wine that reflects the hallmark gravelly minerality of the Graves, precise structure, and restrained elegance typical of the appellation. The 2022 vintage stands out for its excellent fruit purity, energy, and finely controlled ripeness — a wine that is already expressive today, yet clearly built for graceful ageing.

The aromatic profile is clear and layered: blackcurrants, cherries, and blackberries intertwine with notes of cedar, tobacco leaf, graphite, and a subtle smoky nuance, all classic signatures of Pessac-Léognan. With aeration, hints of spice, cocoa, gentle earthiness, and herbal nuances emerge, adding depth and composure to the bouquet.

On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, structured, yet elegant. The tannins are ripe and silky, while the acidity is lively and precise, preserving freshness and fruit clarity. Flavours echo the nose with dark berry fruit, graphite, cedar, and refined spice, leading into a long, dry, mineral-driven finish.

The vineyards of Château Picque Caillou are planted on the gravel and sandy soils of Graves, allowing vines to root deeply and imparting the wine’s characteristic smoky–mineral expression.

The harvest is carried out by hand. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vats, followed by ageing in French oak barrels, carefully balanced to enhance structure while preserving fruit purity and finesse.

Serving recommendations

Serve at 10-12 °C with salmon steak, chicken breast with cream sauce, or grilled vegetables.

About brand

Château Picque Caillou is a Bordeaux wine estate whose history and present day meet in a truly unexpected setting. It is the only still-active vineyard located within the city of Bordeaux itself, having survived urban expansion, the passage of time, and a constantly changing landscape.

The name “Picque Caillou” comes from the estate’s distinctive gravelly, stony soil, long regarded as one of the most suitable terroirs for growing high-quality grapes. These stones absorb heat during the day and slowly release it at night, allowing the grapes to ripen evenly while preserving aromatic depth and balance. This unique soil is one of the key reasons why the wines of Château Picque Caillou are known for their elegance, structure, and aging potential.

Although the estate’s roots go back several centuries, its modern identity was shaped in the late 20th century when it was taken over by the Calvet family. Their vision was to preserve the character of the place while crafting wines that express the classic Pessac-Léognan style, refined through a clean, precise, and contemporary approach to winemaking.

Great attention is paid to handwork in the vineyard, strict yield control, and the individual character of each parcel. Despite being surrounded by the city, the vineyard benefits from a unique microclimate that allows the grapes to reach optimal ripeness. This results in wines of harmony, balance, and natural depth.

Château Picque Caillou wines are defined by:

  • expressive black fruit aromas,
  • subtle spice notes,
  • elegant, well-structured tannins,
  • and a distinct mineral character typical of the Pessac-Léognan appellation.

Today, Château Picque Caillou is regarded as one of the most fascinating “urban vineyards” in the world — a rare estate that preserves Bordeaux tradition while proving that authentic, terroir-driven wine can still be created in the heart of a modern city.
