Red dry
Chiara Boschis – E. Pira & Figli Mosconi Barolo DOCG 2020 is a single-vineyard, 100% ‘Nebbiolo’ wine from the Mosconi cru in Monforte d’Alba. It is one of the most concentrated and structured Barolos from this farm, characterized by a strong inner strength, but also the balance and elegance that are important for the Chiara Boschis style. The wine is made from organically certified grapes.
The aroma of the wine opens up richly and multi-layered: black cherries, a nuance of watermelon candy, incense, menthol, licorice, gravel and more earthy notes. Such an aromatic direction shows not only the ripeness of the fruit, but also the peculiar rigor and depth of the Monforte d’Alba style.
On the palate, the wine is powerful, concentrated and very lively. This is a Barolo whose tannins are firm, but not rough – more velour-like.
The character of this wine is shaped by the Mosconi vineyard in Monforte d’Alba, which E. Pira acquired in 2009, which is dominated by calcareous clay marl soils, with higher calcium carbonate and iron in places, and the plot itself is located at an altitude of around 400 m. The producer emphasizes that it is precisely the heavier clay soil that gives this wine more structure and makes it particularly suitable for long aging.
The winemaking follows a clear, precise scheme: fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, with daily immersions and racking, after which the wine is aged for 24 months in lightly toasted French oak barrels and about a year in the bottle. For the 2020 edition, it is additionally indicated that the proportion of new oak is slightly less than 20%, and the rest is used and neutral barrels. This allows the voice of the Nebbiolo variety and Mosconi origin to remain in the foreground, without the oak becoming dominant.
Serve at 18-20 °C with game stew, pasta with truffles or mature cheeses.
The E. Pira e Figli - Chiara Boschis 2020 Barolo Mosconi has some of the extra ripeness of the vintage with cherry cream syrup, grenadine, watermelon candy and a drop of Pastis. The wine ends on a powerful note with a balanced combination of fruit and fine oak tannins. The palate is very alive, and the fruit feels very vibrant at this young stage. Some 9,000 bottles were made.
"Pira" is an old winemaking family, mentioned in parish registers since the 17th century. Gigi Pira, a legendary representative of the old school of production, created his wines by harvesting grapes from his plots in the Cannubi, San Lorenzo, and Via Nuova vineyards. However, Pira's attachment to tradition did not end there: he was indeed the last surviving winemaker of the old style. Since 1980, continuity has been ensured by Chiara Boschis and her parents Franco and Ida, who already share a deep friendship and mutual respect with Pira and represent the historic "Barolo" producer family. Chiara is one of the first female winemakers in Barolo. Her style differs from the traditional one. The wines are bright, fruity, rich in aromas, and have friendlier tannins. The grapes are grown according to an ecological philosophy, and all processes are carried out by hand.
Wine Style
"Pira" wines are characterized by a distinctive character, blending tradition and modernity. They are elegant, harmonious wines that reflect the uniqueness of the "Barolo" terroir.
Prestigious Vineyards
"Pira" owns prestigious vineyards located in the most famous areas of the "Barolo" region:
These famous vineyards are complemented by other, lesser-known but equally valuable plots where 'Nebbiolo' grapes are grown.
Aging and Drinking Period
"Pira" wines have an excellent balance between youthfulness and aging potential. Thanks to the soft tannins and bright acidity, these wines can be enjoyed in their youth, but they also age and develop beautifully over time. "Barolo" wines are particularly famous for their longevity.
