Description

Chiara Boschis – E. Pira & Figli Via Nuova Barolo DOCG 2020 is a 100% ‘Nebbiolo’ wine from Barolo DOCG, which combines the character of several highly prestigious vineyards. This is not a single-site Barolo, but a carefully crafted cuvée with which Chiara Boschis seeks to harmonize the structure, aromatic precision and elegance of the different Barolo zones. The wine is made from organically certified grapes, and Via Nuova itself is today considered one of the most prominent signatures of this farm.

The aroma of the wine reveals itself in a layered and restrained nobility. It reveals bright notes of cherries, orange peel, raspberries, violets and spring flowers, complemented by hints of licorice, tea leaves, dried herbs, tar and chalky minerality.

The taste of the wine is rich, but very precisely controlled. The tannins are ripe, fine and polished, the acidity maintains freshness, and the texture is full, consistent and long. The 2020 vintage is characterized by a slightly darker fruit concentration than in lighter years, but the wine remains elegant, not overloaded, with a long, harmonious and subtly mineral aftertaste.

The character of this wine is shaped by a combination of several Barolo areas. The official technical information indicates that the Via Nuova connects vineyards in the municipalities of Barolo, Monforte d’Alba and Serralunga d’Alba, and the soils are dominated by calcareous clay and Sant’Agata marl with a sandstone component. It is this mosaic of origins that allows the wine to combine the classic power of Barolo with a more refined, aromatically transparent expression.

The winemaking follows a clear, precise scheme: fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, with regular immersions and racking, and then the wine is aged for 24 months. It is aged in lightly toasted French oak barrels, of which about 30% are new, and then rests in the bottle for about a year. This aging gives the wine structure and depth, without overshadowing the aromatic precision of the Nebbiolo variety.

Serving recommendations

The E. Pira e Figli - Chiara Boschis 2020 Barolo Via Nuova opens to a little more dark fruit and ripe berry in this vintage. The wine is buttoned up from all sides into a tight little package of aromas. You get orange peel, bright cherry and a fragrant springtime fruit blossom. There are hints of herb, tar, violet and chalky mineral. The tannins are finely polished and smooth. This is a 15,000-bottle release.

About brand

"Pira" is an old winemaking family, mentioned in parish registers since the 17th century. Gigi Pira, a legendary representative of the old school of production, created his wines by harvesting grapes from his plots in the Cannubi, San Lorenzo, and Via Nuova vineyards. However, Pira's attachment to tradition did not end there: he was indeed the last surviving winemaker of the old style. Since 1980, continuity has been ensured by Chiara Boschis and her parents Franco and Ida, who already share a deep friendship and mutual respect with Pira and represent the historic "Barolo" producer family. Chiara is one of the first female winemakers in Barolo. Her style differs from the traditional one. The wines are bright, fruity, rich in aromas, and have friendlier tannins. The grapes are grown according to an ecological philosophy, and all processes are carried out by hand.

Wine Style

"Pira" wines are characterized by a distinctive character, blending tradition and modernity. They are elegant, harmonious wines that reflect the uniqueness of the "Barolo" terroir.

  • Red wine: aromatic, with smooth tannins, rich in red fruit notes, elegant, and long-lasting.
  • White wine: clean, fresh, mineral, with subtle floral and fruit aromas.

Prestigious Vineyards

"Pira" owns prestigious vineyards located in the most famous areas of the "Barolo" region:

  • Cannubi: one of the most famous and prestigious "Barolo" vineyards, renowned for its elegant and complex wines.
  • San Lorenzo: a vineyard where powerful and structured "Barolo" wines are born.
  • Via Nuova: a vineyard where grapes are grown to produce aromatic and fruity wines.

These famous vineyards are complemented by other, lesser-known but equally valuable plots where 'Nebbiolo' grapes are grown.

Aging and Drinking Period

"Pira" wines have an excellent balance between youthfulness and aging potential. Thanks to the soft tannins and bright acidity, these wines can be enjoyed in their youth, but they also age and develop beautifully over time. "Barolo" wines are particularly famous for their longevity.
