Torre de Oña Finca Martelo Reserva Rioja DOCa 2019

Description

The wine is elegant and balanced, with refreshing acidity and silky tannins, exuding aromas of raspberries, blueberries and blackberries. Subtly expressed balsamic notes and cloves come through. The wine has an exceptionally long berry-driven aftertaste.

The wine is produced from a single vineyard — Torre de Oña, located in Rioja Alavesa. This is an exceptionally old vineyard, where the vines are over 60 years old. The vineyard sits at 630 m above sea level, where the prevailing winds help ensure balance during grape ripening. After destemming and crushing the berries, the wine was kept at low temperature (10⁰C) with the skins to extract intense colour and aromas. Following fermentation, the wine was kept in French and American oak barrels for 98 days, with weekly 'batonnage' — stirring of the wine lees — performed throughout this period. The wine was then aged in American (80%) and French (20%) oak barrels for 24 months, with the final blend spending a further 6 months in stainless steel tanks.

Serving recommendations

Serve at 16–18 °C with game roasts, cured Ibérico ham or mature cheeses.

About brand

Bodegas La Rioja Alta is undoubtedly a representative of old Rioja, exceptionally valuing and cultivating the region's traditional winemaking methods. Their “Gran Reserva” wine is aged for no less than six years in barrel and a further two years in bottle before reaching the consumer, embodying patience and mastery. The high-altitude vineyards of La Rioja Alta, with their unique conditions, lend a subtlety to the wines, sometimes even reminiscent of Burgundy’s ‘Pinot Noir’. While the La Rioja Alta group also includes wineries in Galicia (Rias Baixas) and Ribera del Duero (Burgos), it is their traditional Rioja style that remains their hallmark.

Wine Style

La Rioja Alta wines are characterized by elegance, complexity, and longevity. They reflect the harmony between Rioja terroir and traditional winemaking.

  • Red wines: boast intense aromas of red and dark berries, elegant spice notes, smooth yet structured tannins, and a long, pleasant finish. Extended aging in oak barrels imparts nuances of vanilla, tobacco, and leather.

Prestigious Vineyards

La Rioja Alta manages high-altitude vineyards in the Rioja Alta region:

  • Vineyards with predominantly limestone and clay soils, ideally suited for growing ‘Tempranillo’ and other traditional Rioja varieties.
  • Vineyards whose altitude above sea level and cooler conditions lead to a slower ripening of the grapes, lending freshness and elegance to the wines.

These unique vineyard characteristics and meticulous work in the vineyard are the foundation for the distinctive character of La Rioja Alta wines.

Aging and Drinking Window

La Rioja Alta wines are crafted for slow enjoyment. The long aging process in oak barrels and bottles imparts exceptional complexity and harmony. While these wines can be enjoyed in their youth, their true potential unfolds after many years of bottle aging. They are wines valued for their longevity and ability to improve over time.
