White sweet
Klaus Lotz Erdener Riesling Eiswein 2016 — an exceptionally concentrated, sweet and aromatic “ice” wine — rare, due to its complex production technique and low yield, and therefore valued as a true delicacy. The aromas of the wine spread rich notes of honey, tropical and stone fruits (e.g. peach, apricot), sometimes — candied citrus peel. Elegant floral touches and soft mineral accents reminiscent of a slope rock or a hint of slate are possible. Such an aromatic complex — typical of quality Riesling Eiswein — gives the wine richness, depth and multi-layeredness.
When tasting, an intense, sweet and concentrated wine profile: ripe fruitiness, along with a bright, lively sharp line of acidity, which gives the wine structure and balance. Although sweetness dominates, high acidity and minerality allow the wine to remain fresh and elegant. The aftertaste is long, pleasantly sweet, with a hint of flowing honey and fruit.
Like all Eiswein wines, this one is made from grapes that have been harvested already frozen — this allows the water to remain in the ice, and the sugar and aromas to be concentrated in the juice. This method — very risky and climate-dependent — is why Eiswein production is rare and small. Frozen grapes are pressed immediately, the juice is fermented slowly.
Serve at a temperature of 8–10 °C. It is a great choice for desserts, fatty cheese, and classic French foie gras.
Klaus Lotz Winery is located in the Moselle region, which is characterized by hills and steep slopes. The winery belongs to the Lotz family, which grows grapes from generation to generation in order to realize its goal of producing high-quality fruit and mineral wines that reflect the characteristics of the area. In addition to the famous grape varieties, the family also makes wine from the local black grape Dornfelder, which is well adapted to grow in a rather cool climate region.
