Compagnia di Volpaia Cabernet Sauvignon Maremma Toscana DOC 2022 – elegance and subtlety, romance and tranquility. This is a ‘Cabernet Sauvignon’ from the coastal area of Maremma (Tuscany), in which an international variety is interpreted in a Tuscan way: more tension, clean structure and moderation, and not just a demonstration of “sun ripeness”. The wine is aged for 9 months in large-capacity 30 hl new French oak barrels and 3 months in the bottle, so the oak acts here as a “frame” of the texture, rather than the dominant aroma.
In the glass, first of all, tones of cherries, blackcurrants and blackberries open up, complemented by cinnamon spice and a nuance of forest floor (wet earth) – the classic signature of ‘Cabernet’ “earthiness”.
In the mouth, the wine is medium-bodied, with well-defined but elegant tannins and lively acidity that frames the fruit and gives a clean finish. The fruitiness of the dark berries transitions into a spicy, slightly savory finish.
The Maremma style is often shaped by maritime influences - the warmth ripens the Cabernet, while coastal winds and well-drained, sandy alluvial soils help maintain freshness and structural precision (a high amount of sand with an admixture of clay, gravel and silt are typical).
"Castello di Volpaia" is more than just vineyards and a farm – it's the historic residence of the Della Volpaia family of Florence, a dynasty of artists and builders who once created armillary spheres and sundials. Lorenzo, a friend of Leonardo da Vinci, who created an impressive clock for Florence's Palazzo Vecchio, was a particularly prominent member.
Today, "Castello di Volpaia" belongs to the Mascheroni Stianti family, who are dedicated to ensuring that every restoration respects the original artistic heritage. Maintaining the traditions of the 11th century, the castle and the surrounding village remain closely linked to the production of high-quality wine and olive oil. The unique terroir of the Volpaia area, located in the prestigious Chianti Classico region, gives the wines their distinctive character. The winery owns 360 hectares of vineyards, which are farmed according to strict organic farming principles, emphasizing the harmony between nature and man. "Castello di Volpaia" is undoubtedly considered a super classic Italian wine producer, and almost all of their red wines are made from Tuscany's primary grape variety, ‘Sangiovese’.
