The Rhône Valley (Vallée du Rhône) is one of France’s oldest and most significant wine regions, stretching from Lyon to the Mediterranean Sea. The region is divided into two distinct parts – the Northern Rhône (Rhône Septentrional) and the Southern Rhône (Rhône Méridional) – each with its own unique climate, soils, and winemaking traditions.
In the Northern Rhône, single-varietal wines dominate. Elegant and structured red wines are crafted exclusively from ‘Syrah’, producing some of the region’s most renowned appellations such as Côte-Rôtie, Hermitage, and Cornas. White wines here are made from ‘Viognier’, ‘Marsanne’, and ‘Roussanne’, known for their fragrant, floral, and rich character – particularly in appellations like Condrieu and Saint-Péray.

Northern Rhône ‘Syrah’ pairs beautifully with beef, duck, and peppery stews, while the whites from ‘Viognier’ or ‘Roussanne’ complement poultry, seafood, and mild cheeses. The Southern Rhône, by contrast, produces fuller-bodied, warmer red wines – ideal with grilled meats, lamb, and the herb-rich cuisine of Provence.
