'Gaja Barolo Sperss 2020' wine demonstrates the typical power and energy of Serralunga d'Alba. 'Sperss' is a vineyard located in one of the best Barolo communes, Serralunga.
The wine is deep, full-bodied, multi-layered, and sharp: with cherry, raspberry, forest floor, black truffle, bark, mushroom, licorice, and iodine aromas.
A long mineral aftertaste suggests the long aging potential of this wine in the future. The wine is unfiltered.
The amphitheater-shaped 30-hectare plot consists of very compact clay and limestone marl layers, facing south and southwest, with an average altitude of 1210 feet above sea level. The 'Nebbiolo' vines growing here are approximately 50 years old.
The grape juice fermentation and maceration process lasted 3 weeks in stainless steel tanks. The wine was then aged for 12 months in small and 18 months in large oak barrels.
Serve at 16-18 °C with rich game dishes with wild mushrooms, beef sirloin steak or bright, long-ripened hard cheeses flavoured with truffles.
"Very spicy with deep, dark earth and forest flavours of black truffles, bark, mushrooms, liquorice and iodine. Full-bodied and very restrained, with a linear and racy palate that lingers for minutes. Gunpowder emphasises the character of the dark fruits and the forest floor. Structured. Try it after 2028."
"Showing the power and the contoured definition that is typical of Serralunga d'Alba, the Gaja 2020 Barolo Sperss is a wine of greater brawn and intensity. Yet its power remains elegantly in line with the character of the vintage. It offers a complete photograph of its territory with rusty ferrous notes, orange peel, dark fruit and licorice. There is a fun end note of dark Amarena cherry to conclude. That hint of sweetness ties into elegantly chalky tannins."
"The reduced aromas are earthy, with hints of cherry and raspberry. The flavours are fresh and lively, with fine precision and a tightly wound structure that emphasises the notes of cherry, raspberry, iron, tobacco and undergrowth. The excellent length of the mineral finish hints at the future potential of this wine."
The Gaja family settled in the Piedmont region of northwestern Italy in the mid-17th century. They have been producing wine in the Barbaresco area since 1859. Four generations of dedicated work and a noble pursuit of making top-quality wines have made the Gaja name synonymous with Italian winemaking excellence worldwide. Today, the fifth generation – Gaia, Giovanni, and Rossana Gaja – continues the family traditions, leading this legendary winery.
Currently, Gaja in Piedmont produces both classic expressions of the ‘Nebbiolo’ grape – Barbarescos and Barolos – and innovative “Langhe DOC” red and white wines from international grape varieties. The family also owns two estates in Tuscany: “Ca’Marcanda” in Bolgheri, famous for its “Super Tuscan” wines, and “Pieve S. Restituta” in the Montalcino area, producing “Brunello di Montalcino” wines. Additionally, a joint project with Alberto Graci in Sicily, at the foot of Mount Etna, testifies to the family’s constant pursuit of innovation and quality.
The Gaja family firmly believes that the true spirit and quality of wine are born in the vineyards themselves. Therefore, the greatest attention is paid to vineyard care: searching for climate change-resistant clones, limiting yields, growing other crops between vineyard rows to enrich the soil and help retain moisture and protect the harvest from heat. The highest quality standards are applied to all farms: grapes are grown only in family-owned vineyards, adhering to ecological and sustainability principles, with particular attention to soil quality and biodiversity.
