Description

The price of the 2016 Viñedo Chadwick seems to be going through the roof, and so does the quality. This is a unique, classical Maipo Cabernet that is marketed separately and sold through the négociants in Bordeaux, the same as with Seña, rather than through the regular importers. Sourced from 15 hectares planted 26 years ago (in 1992), the grapes fermented in small stainless steel and concrete vats and matured in 2,500-liter oak vats and 225-liter barriques. It has 3% Petit Verdot and is remarkably low in alcohol at 13%, with a lot of freshness and acidity. This follows the line of change that started in 2015, with more freshness and harmony, and for the first time, it includes a small percentage of Petit Verdot that was planted around 2007. The yields are low, and the grapes ripened nicely before the rains that complicated the end of the harvest. 2016 is a cool year that resulted in a slow and perfect ripening of the grapes. This is now a very elegant wine, getting closer to the style of Seña. Complex, layered, fresh and tasty, it has very fine tannins and is nicely structured but terribly elegant at the same time. 12,000 bottles were filled in February 2018.

About brand

Viñedo Chadwick is one of the most prestigious icons of the Chilean wine world, located in the Puente Alto appellation, in the Maipo Valley. This estate is part of the Chadwick family legacy, established in honor of Alfonso Chadwick Errázuriz. It was here, on the site of the family's former polo field, that vineyards were planted in 1992, producing wines in small quantities that have since gained international acclaim.

The estate’s legacy is carried forward by Eduardo Chadwick, who not only strengthened the prestige of Chilean wine globally but also initiated the historic “Berlin Tasting” in 2004, where Viñedo Chadwick 2000 outperformed several renowned Bordeaux and Italian wines.

The Vineyard

The vineyard covers just 15 hectares, nestled at 650 meters above sea level at the foothills of the Andes. Surrounded by granite and alluvial soils, it offers excellent drainage and balanced ripening conditions. All vineyard work is carried out by hand, and yields are strictly limited to achieve maximum concentration and pure expression of the terroir.

Wine Style

Viñedo Chadwick is known for its elegant, age-worthy, structured and refined style. The nose reveals notes of blackcurrant, cherry, tobacco, cedar, graphite, as well as subtle hints of mint and herbs. On the palate, it offers a perfect balance of silky tannins, fresh acidity, and a long, concentrated fruit-driven finish. The alcohol level sits around 13%, reflecting a classic European structure with New World vibrancy.

Prestigious Vineyards

The main grape variety is ‘Cabernet Sauvignon’, which often makes up 97–100% of the blend. In some vintages, a small portion of ‘Petit Verdot’ is added to enhance depth and spice. The grapes are fermented in stainless steel or concrete tanks, and the wine is aged for 22 months, with about 75% in new French oak barrels, and the rest in large foudre oak casks.

Ageing and Drinking Window

Although Viñedo Chadwick can be appreciated in its youth, its true elegance unfolds after 7–10 years of ageing. It reaches peak maturity around 15–20 years, making it a brilliant addition to any serious wine collection.
