What is Armagnac and its production secrets

Born in the Gascony region of Southwestern France, this beverage is made by distilling white wine. Although its history predates Cognac, it still remains somewhat of an undiscovered treasure, meant for true connoisseurs and those seeking unique flavors.

Single distillation and oak barrels

The essential feature of its production is a single, continuous distillation in a traditional copper still. This process preserves much more of the primary grape aromas and natural fruitiness. Afterwards, the beverage is aged for many years, sometimes even decades, in local oak barrels, where it acquires its amber color and notes of vanilla, prunes, and spices.

The "Darroze Armagnac" phenomenon

If you are looking for the ultimate experience, Darroze Armagnac is a name you must remember. This house is famous for buying the best distillates from small, independent estates and carefully aging them in their own cellars. They never blend beverages from different estates or vintage years, and they bottle them without any added water or coloring. This allows you to experience the purest, most authentic Gascon terroir.

The letters or numbers on the label help you understand how much time the youngest drop of the beverage spent in an oak barrel before being bottled.

From VS to XO

VS (Very Special) is aged for at least 1–3 years, VSOP (Very Superior Old Pale) – at least 4 years, and XO (Extra Old) – at least 10 years. The longer the aging, the smoother, more viscous, and more complex the beverage becomes.

Vintage Armagnacs

This is the true pride of the region. The year indicated on the bottle means that all the beverage inside was distilled exclusively from the harvest of that specific year. How does Armagnac differ from Cognac?

Although both are French grape brandies, Armagnac is distilled only once (Cognac is distilled twice), which allows it to retain a bolder, more robust, and fruitier character. Additionally, this region is located further south, with different soils and dominant grape varieties, such as Baco or Folle Blanche.

In what glasses should it be served?
