Origins of Cognac: Why the region matters

Cognac is inseparable from its place of origin. The region is divided into six zones (crus), with the most prestigious being Grande Champagne and Petite Champagne. The chalky soil found here grants the cognac exceptional aroma, lightness, and incredible aging potential. Only spirits made from grapes grown in these zones can be labeled as Fine Champagne.

Age Classification

To choose the right bottle, it is essential to understand the labels indicating the age of the youngest spirit in the blend:

  • V.S. (Very Special) – aged for at least two years. An energetic, fruity cognac, perfect for sipping neat or in cocktails.
  • V.S.O.P. (Very Superior Old Pale) – aged for at least four years. Characterized by greater smoothness with notes of vanilla and wood.
  • X.O. (Extra Old) – the pinnacle of the core range, where the youngest spirit has spent at least 10 years in the barrel (often much longer). A complex, rich cognac with aromas of dried fruits, tobacco, and spices.

How to enjoy Cognac?

Cognac is traditionally considered a digestif, enjoyed after dinner. To fully experience its bouquet, it is recommended to use a tulip-shaped glass, which concentrates the aromas. Unlike basic brandy, premium cognac should not be overheated by the palm—room temperature is ideal.

Food Pairing

Cognac pairs beautifully with gourmet snacks. Try it with dark chocolate, aged cheeses, or rich pâté. Find a wide range of complementary flavors in our snacks for wine section.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Cognac and Armagnac?

While both are produced in France, Cognac is distilled twice, whereas Armagnac is distilled only once. This gives Cognac more smoothness and elegance, while Armagnac possesses a more rustic, robust, and intense character.

Is Cognac suitable as a gift?

Cognac is one of the most prestigious and reliable gifts. A prestigious XO bottle or a limited-edition vintage cognac always symbolizes high status, respect, and an exceptional focus on quality.
