Mead

1–7 of 7

Mead is an aristocratic and the oldest known alcoholic beverage, born from the fermentation of natural honey. In Lithuania, mead holds a special status: it is the drink of our ancestors, grand dukes, and nobility, with recipes cherished for centuries. Modern mead makers combine archaic methods with contemporary winemaking, offering both rich, potent traditional meads and light honey nectars or spirits enriched with local berries and herbs. Discover Lithuania's "liquid gold," characterized by its unique aroma and gentle honeyed sweetness.

Mead Production: Patience and Nature's Bounty

True mead is crafted from only the highest quality honey, water, and yeast. Depending on the recipe, it can be boiled or cold-fermented and then aged in barrels from several months to several years. Lithuanian mead is unique for often being infused with natural juices (juniper berries, raspberries, currants) and herbs (thyme, linden blossoms), which add incredible complexity to the spirit.

Types of Mead and Styles

The world of mead is highly diverse; it is helpful to know the main categories:

  • Traditional Mead: Made by fermenting a solution of honey and water. Can be dry, semi-sweet, or sweet.
  • Mead Nectar: A lighter, aromatic beverage where the honey base is complemented by fruit or berry juices.
  • Honey Spirits & Bitters: These are distilled mead products or mead-based bitters, featuring higher alcohol content and intense herbal aromas.
  • Lithuanian Mead with PGI: Premium products manufactured according to strict traditional methods with a Protected Geographical Indication.

How to enjoy mead?

Mead is a versatile drink that can be enjoyed both cold and warm. Lighter, lower-alcohol mead drinks are best served chilled (12–14°C) as an aperitif. Strong mead is usually savored at room temperature from small glasses, allowing the long-lasting finish to unfold slowly.

Food Pairing

Mead pairs perfectly with traditional cheeses (especially curd cheese with honey), nuts, and poultry dishes. Sweeter variants are the ideal companion for desserts featuring apples or cinnamon. Find a wide range of complementary flavors in our snacks for wine section.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is mead the same as honey wine?

The terms are often used interchangeably, but traditional mead is made solely from honey. If grape juice is added during production, it is technically called Pyment; if apples are added, it is Cyser. In Lithuania, we tend to refer to all honey-based fermented beverages as mead.

Is mead suitable as a gift?

Most definitely! Mead is one of the most representative souvenirs and gifts from Lithuania. Due to its historical value, luxurious packaging, and unique taste, it is highly valued by international guests and business partners as an authentic symbol of Northern European culture.
