One Grape – Two Worlds

Translated from Italian and French, Grigio and Gris both mean "grey." This is a direct reference to the grape's skin, which, unlike most other white varieties, takes on a dusty pinkish-grey hue as it ripens. Although genetically it is the exact same grape (a mutation of Pinot Noir), winemaking traditions and distinct climates have divided its world into two very different stylistic paths.

Key Styles in Our Assortment

  • Italian Pinot Grigio: Produced in the cooler regions of Northern Italy (such as Veneto, Friuli, and Alto Adige). This is a light, exceptionally crisp, and zesty wine dominated by notes of green apple, lemon, and white blossoms. It is the absolute perfect choice for warm summer days.
  • French Pinot Gris: The calling card of the Alsace region in France. This style is much more viscous, full-bodied, and intensely aromatic. In the glass, it reveals ripe peaches, honey, ginger, and sweet baking spices. It also frequently carries a touch of residual sugar.
  • New World Versions: Countries like New Zealand, the USA, or South Africa usually indicate on the label the specific style they were aiming to replicate. If you see "Pinot Gris," expect a richer, more textural wine; if you see "Pinot Grigio," anticipate a lighter, crisper profile.

Ideal Food Pairings

Thanks to its stylistic diversity, this grape opens up a wide array of gastronomic possibilities. A light and acidic Pinot Grigio serves as an ideal aperitif, pairing wonderfully with fresh salads, delicate seafood (shrimp, calamari), and classic Italian antipasti. Meanwhile, a richer Pinot Gris, due to its fuller body and subtle sweetness, is one of the best companions for spicy, exotic Asian cuisine, roasted poultry with creamy sauces, or even medium-aged cheeses.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Pinot Grigio always just a white wine?

While we most commonly encounter the white version, the naturally pinkish skin of the grape means that in Italy—particularly in the Friuli region—a traditional Ramato (copper-colored) style of wine is also produced. During its production, the grape juice is left in brief contact with the skins, giving the wine a delicate pink/copper hue and slightly more structure, closely resembling a rosé or even a gentle orange wine.

At what temperature should this wine be served?

An Italian-style Pinot Grigio should be well-chilled (around 7–9°C) to maximize its refreshing crispness and zesty acidity. A weightier, more complex Alsatian Pinot Gris is best served slightly warmer (around 10–12°C), allowing its intricate honey and spice aromas to fully unfurl.
