Description

Quintessa Rutherford 2021 is a wine with rich fruitiness, precise structure and a balance of vibrant freshness. Floral notes – violets and lilacs – enhance the intense aroma of blackcurrant and black cherry, highlighted by notes of anise, bay leaf and forest floor. Firm but fine tannins reflect the flavors of dark berries and spicy herbs, intertwined with graphite and iron. The generous texture conveys complex layers to a subtle, chalky aftertaste.

Fermentation took place with natural (wild) yeasts in small open stainless steel and concrete tanks. The wine was aged for 22 months in French oak barrels – 65% new.

Quintessa innovation in 2021 – 3% of the wine was aged in terracotta amphorae.

Serving recommendations

Serve at 16 - 18 °C. Goes well with red meat, mature cheese, mushroom dishes or even delicate stews.

James Suckling

So much graphite and volcanic character on the nose with metal shavings and gunpowder. Black ink, iron and rust, too. Blackberry and blackcurrant undertones. Full-bodied but not overpowering, with chewy and juicy tannins that are long and very subtle. Superb finish. From biodynamic grapes with Demeter certification. 91% cabernet sauvignon, 4% cabernet franc, 3% carmenere, 1% merlot, and 1% petit verdot. Drinkable now, but better in 2027.

About brand

HIDDEN IN THE HEART OF RUTHERFORD, Quintessa is a 280-acre site that reflects a diversity of geology, biodiversity, exposures and microclimates. Inspired by this distinct property, founders Agustin and Valeria Huneeus believed that it was destined to become one of the world’s great wine estates. Today, a total of 160 acres are planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Carménère on 26 vineyard blocks. Each block is farmed—organically and biodynamically—harvested, and vinified individually to preserve and enhance the nuances of the land. Inspired by the land’s natural grandeur, the Huneeus family dedicated themselves to capturing the beauty and harmony of this land in the form of a great wine.
