Eye: deep/opaque intensity of purple colour with violet reflections on the rim. Dense consistency, staining of the tears. One of the key features of Malbec is ability to save this violet rim even in 10 years old bottles.
Nose: Pronounced intensity of very ripe and fresh black fruits: blackberry, blueberry, black plum and black cherry. Definitely the wine was aged in French oak, because of smoke and toast aromas, dark oakspices and charred wood. A touch of evolution notes of tobacco leaf, leather and hazelnut give complexity which is high in this wine.
Palate: Rich and full-bodied wine, burning effect of high alcohol is balanced by fruitiness of sour dark berries, high crunchy acidity and moderate tanins, a little bit grippy. In the mid palate oak influence comming in gentle way. Elevated finish with touch of dark cherry seed bitternes. High fruits concentration and complexity.
Keys to compare French and Argentinian Malbec: French Malbec has less intensity of the colour but has the same spectrum. Argentinian has mostly dark fruit profile while French has diversity of reds with hints of black.
Eye: Moderate intensity of ruby colour with watery garnet reflections of the rim. Medium viscosity, thin tears, no staining.
Nose: Elevated (medium +) intensity of red cherry and strawberry aromas, red fruit marmalade. A lot influence of American oak aging because of very sweet vanilla, brown sugar and sweet baking spices. Beautiful evolution notes of mushrooms, dust and forest floor here. Also, high complexity.
Palate: Dry moderate body, high acidity and fine-grained elevated tannins. Alcohol is warming moderate, but well-balanced. Length is long, tannic, moderate complexity. On the palate the wine drives into earthy and woody notes with cherry and red fruits backbone.
Key to compare Rioja Crianza with Reserva and with Ribera del Duero: Reserva usually has more concentration of red fruits with touch of black. Also, oak influence feels more complex and deeper than in Crianza. Ribera del Duera has deeper colour and black fruits spectrum, less sweet oak influence and it depends on the style.
Nose: Moderate intensity of red berries: strawberry, cherry, raspberry. Sweet red fruits compote. Dusty and earthy character on the nose. Touch of aging in old oak because of gentle aromas of toast, cloves and hint of cedar. Not jumping nose. Medium complexity.
Palate: Bone dry, mouthcoating moderate body with extremely high dominating chalky tannins, medium + acidity, and high pronounced alcohol, but you don’t feel it direct, it is balanced and integrated. Elegant finish continues with tannins perception. Juicy red fruits notes, touch of evolution of green tobacco leaf, nutmeg, balsamic and figs.
Key to compare Langhe Nebbiolo with Sangiovese and Barolo/Barbaresco: Usually classical Barolo and Barbaresco have more brick rim due to longer aging in bottle and in oak. The wines can show more pronounced dusty, leafy and earthy aromas. Sangiovese in Chianti displays sour cherry, tea and cranberry. Chianti and Vino Nobile don’t have these high grippy tannins, they are more polished.
