Gin is a strong aromatic drink, known for its subtle herbal and botanical aromas. Gin is made by distilling fermented grains and adding a variety of botanical ingredients such as juniper berries, citrus fruits, aniseed, angelica root and anise. In the gin-making process, the botanical ingredients are treated by steam or infusion. The main styles of gin are 'London Dry' gin (dry, aromatic, with no added sugar), 'Plymouth Gin' (extra smooth, produced only in Plymouth), 'Old Tom' gin (licorice-sweetened gin), 'Navy Strenght' gin (a gin with a higher strength of alcohol, usually 57%). The drink has a long history dating back to the Middle Ages, when it was used in Europe as a medicinal drink. Today it is one of the most popular alcoholic beverages, both on its own and in various cocktails.
