Vat 1 Semillon only ever comes from our best old vine, dry grown vineyards. These blocks feature ideal sandy, free draining soils that give these wines their unique character. The oldest of these blocks was planted in 1923. The 2017 Vintage was one of the best in recent memory and has produced wines of the highest quality.
All of the fruit was hand picked and carefully sorted in the vineyard. After a relatively cool fermentation in stainless steel tanks, the wine spent a minimal time on yeast lees before being bottled early to maintain its freshness. No oak fermentation or maturation.
With lifted lime citrus aromas the palate is seamless, showing the typical powerful fruit core which is balanced by the wine’s texture and soft acid profile. This wine shows a length of flavour only produced from great vineyards.
Serve at 8-10 °C with rock oysters, sashimi or scallops.
2017 was hailed as a great vintage in the Hunter Valley, but it was also hot and dry, so this is a richer, more advanced bottling than the previous vintage. Lucid and concentrated, it's unmistakably Hunter Sem, with its woolly, beeswax, lemon pith and lamp oil appeal. A mineral, flinty note adds interest. There's a laser-like line of acidity on the slippery palate and a flavor richness that flows to the long finish. Drink now—2030
Founded in 1858 by English immigrant Edward Tyrrell, Tyrrell's Wines is one of Australia's most famous family-owned wineries. The family's vineyards stretch from its historic home in the Hunter Valley near Sydney to the Limestone Coast and Heathcote.
Run by fourth generation family member Bruce Tyrrell, the winery produces some of Australia's most awarded wines including the iconic Vat 1 Semillon.
The Hunter Valley's sandy, alluvial soil is ideal for white grapes. There are 11 vineyards in the region that are more than 100 years old, 7 of which belong to the Tyrrell family.
Tyrrell's is one of the founding members of Australia's First Families of Wine.
Since 1971, Tyrrell's has won more than 5 000 trophies and medals, and was named Wine of the Year by James Halliday's Australian Wine Companion in 2010.
