Description

Experience the exquisite depth of André Bonhomme Vieilles Vignes Viré-Clessé AOC 2023, a stellar representation of exceptionally old 'Chardonnay' vines. This remarkable white Burgundy masterfully blends vibrant fruit with profound minerality.

The classic nose unfurls with aromas of white peaches, apples, toasted wheat germ, and raw honeycomb. As it evolves in the glass, fleeting suggestions of wild fennel, golden honey figs, and almond blossoms emerge. On the palate, creamy and elegant, mineral-saturated 'Chardonnay' flavors, including salted pears, crème brûlée, and ripe honeydew.

Sourced from seven separate, east-facing hillside 'Chardonnay' vineyards, each planted more than fifty years ago, located above the villages of Viré and Clessé in the Mâconnais. Farming is entirely organic, with grapes hand-harvested from 70-95-year-old vines rooted in gray and red clay soils with limestone rock inclusions.

The hand-picked grapes are then fermented (70% in neutral 400-liter barrels) using wild yeast cultures and aged for 20 months in French oak barrels, all while resting on their lees.

Serving recommendations

Serve at 8-10 °C with snails, frogs' legs, scallops fried in breadcrumbs, poultry dishes or soft, creamy cheeses.

About brand

The A. Bonhomme winery was founded in 1956 by Andre Bonhomme. The estate boasts many old vines—some approaching 100 years of age, with certain plots planted as early as 1923. André Bonhomme's estate is considered one of the leading producers in the Vire-Clessé appellation, having significantly contributed to the establishment and tightening of its appellation rules. High-quality oak barrels, optimal grape ripeness, and strict quality requirements enable the production of wines that are appealing and elegant in their youth, yet also age beautifully. This advantage is characteristic of only a few of the best Vire-Clessé producers. Wines of similar quality, elegance, and concentration from estates further north in Burgundy's Côte d'Or region typically cost significantly more. Here, vineyards have long been cultivated using ecological viticulture methods, aiming to develop the vines' natural immunity to diseases rather than just treating them.

Wine Style

André Bonhomme wines are pure, mineral-driven, and elegant, reflecting the authentic expression of the Mâcon region's 'Chardonnay'.

  • The wine displays a bright, light color with greenish hues. The aromatic bouquet is dominated by white flowers, citrus, and mineral notes, often with hints of white peach, apple, and almond.
  • On the palate, the wine is vibrant, fresh, and well-balanced, offering good fruit concentration and pronounced minerality. The finish is long, leaving a chalky or light flinty sensation.

Prestigious Vineyards

André Bonhomme's vineyards are located within the Vire-Clessé appellation, characterized by clay and limestone soils. The old vines are a key guarantor of quality, imparting concentration and complexity to the wines.

Aging and Consumption Period

André Bonhomme wines are notable for their aging potential. While they are appealing and elegant in their youth, their true depth and complexity unfold after several years of bottle aging, allowing new aromas and flavors to develop and evolve.
