Description

Georg Breuer Berg Roseneck Rüdesheim Riesling QbA 2018 - a single-vineyard ‘Riesling’ from the Rüdesheim Berg Roseneck vineyard in the Rheingau region. This is a concentrated, mineral and elegant white wine, belonging to Georg Breuer’s highest category, single-vineyard ‘Grand Cru’ line. The 2018 harvest was considered very successful at the winery: a cold winter was followed by an early start to vegetation, a very hot summer and healthy, high-quality berries.

In aroma, this wine reveals itself restrained but layered: the impression of citrus and somewhat tropical fruits, herbs, ripe but still juicy fruit and fine shale minerality is evident. This is not an overtly fruity, but rather an origin and structure-oriented ‘Riesling’.

In taste, the wine has a strong acid axis, a sense of salty minerality and a pronounced concentration. The residual sugar is 2.4 g/l, the total acidity is 6.3 g/l, so it remains dry, precise and tense in the mouth, but at the same time not angular. The texture is quite full, and the aftertaste retains the ripeness of the fruit, salty mineral notes and a long, harmonious aftertaste.

The character of the Berg Roseneck site is shaped by very rocky slopes, southern exposure and geological diversity: deep phyllite, clay and quartz slate soils with layers of loess and loam. This combination of soils helps the ‘Riesling’ variety to reach full maturity, maintaining mineral tension and long maturation potential.

James Suckling

Fresh, minerally and attractive aromas of green apples and melon here with some dried flowers and grassy notes. The palate has a bold and fleshy feel with very concentrated fresh-fruit flavor. Drink now. Screw cap.

The 2018 Berg Roseneck opens with a clear, intense and elegant, finely slatey bouquet of ripe and concentrated but still juicy Riesling fruit. Full-bodied and powerful on the palate, this is a dense and intense, almost viscous Riesling that is still a bit toneless on the palate but complex and rich, providing dense fruit with body, good tannins, mouth-filling texture and lingering salinity. 12% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in July 2022.

About brand

The estate, founded in 1880 as part of a wine merchant company, has been owned by the Breuer family since the beginning of the 20th century. Georg Breuer enlarged the estate and increased the export of wines. His sons Bernhard and Heinrich and later Bernhard’s daughter Theresa expanded the vineyard size to 40 hectares in the best Rüdesheim, Rauenthal and Lorch sites. From the early 80’s Bernhard Breuer’s efforts gained an international reputation for the estate. Today it is managed by his daughter Theresa Breuer and production manager of many years, Hermann Schmoranz, with the assistance of cellar master Markus Lundén.
