Chateau Beau-Sejour Becot Saint-Emilion Grand Cru Classe AOC 2020

Description

A vibrant Saint-Émilion wine in which the fruitiness of 'Merlot' is combined with the minerality, freshness and precise tannic structure of the limestone plateau. The warm and dry 2020 vintage gave the wine concentration and ripe fruit character, while sufficient acidity preserves its freshness and aromatic precision.

On the nose, black cherries, plums, blackberries and blueberries are complemented by violet, liquorice, mint, spice, cocoa and subtle oak notes. As the wine opens, the fruit becomes deeper, revealing more floral character, graphite and earthy nuances.

On the palate, the wine is rich, concentrated and layered, yet never heavy, retaining a clear line of freshness. 'Merlot' provides dark-fruit concentration and roundness, while 'Cabernet Franc' adds aromatic precision, floral character and structure. The tannins are dense yet supple and well integrated, giving the wine firmness without a sense of heaviness. The finish is long, dry and mineral, with lingering notes of dark fruit, spice, liquorice, graphite and a subtle saline character.

An important part of the character of 'Beau-Séjour Bécot' is its limestone-plateau terroir in Saint-Émilion. The limestone soils provide minerality, tension and freshness, while the clay layers help maintain concentration and textural breadth.

The wine is aged in a range of vessels, combining new French oak with larger wooden vessels, amphorae and foudres. Around two-thirds of the wine is aged in new oak, with the remainder matured in other vessels. This approach adds texture, spice and complexity while preserving the purity of the fruit and the tension characteristic of the limestone terroir of Saint-Émilion.

A terrific performance for an estate on a continuing upward trajectory, the 2020 Beau-Séjour Bécot unwinds in the glass with a deep bouquet of cherries and blackberries mingled with violets and spices. Medium to full-bodied, pure and layered, it's deep and concentrated, with a vibrant core of fruit, polished tannins and a long, sapid finish. The 2020 is a blend of 85% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Franc and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon, some two-thirds of which was matured in new oak, with the balance in tanks, amphorae and foudres.

About brand

Château Beau-Séjour Bécot is one of the most important wine estates in Bordeaux’s Saint-Émilion appellation, with a history dating back to the mid-20th century. Since then, the estate has belonged to the Bécot family, who have consistently nurtured its reputation and upheld strong traditional winemaking principles.

The estate manages approximately 22.5 hectares of vineyards, planted with the classic Saint-Émilion varieties: ‘Merlot’, ‘Cabernet Franc’, and ‘Cabernet Sauvignon’. The structure and age of the vineyards are key factors in the character of the estate: the average vine age is 37 years, while some parcels still contain ‘Merlot’ vines over 70 years old. These old-vine plantings contribute depth, complexity, and an additional aromatic dimension to the wines.

The winery is advised by renowned international wine consultant Michel Rolland, whose involvement helps Château Beau-Séjour Bécot combine the traditions of classic Bordeaux style with modern quality standards and expression. As a result, the estate’s wines beautifully convey the now classic Saint-Émilion style – expressive and complex wines with a refined texture and clearly defined minerality.

Work at the estate is carried out responsibly and sustainably: the vineyards are managed in a way that preserves the natural environment, and the harvest is carried out at optimal ripeness to achieve the best balance between acidity, fruit, and maturity. After fermentation, the wines are aged for an extended period in oak barrels.

Château Beau-Séjour Bécot wines are valued for their harmony, aromatic depth, and their ability to reflect the unique character of the Saint-Émilion terroir. These are wines suitable both for ageing and for immediate enjoyment.
