Description

This wine has a dark red, almost black colour. The nose is redolent of fresh fruit (raspberries, cherries, strawberries) and, after swirling in the glass, more complex notes of spice, dried herbs, fennel, and a slight floral nuance. The wine is straightforward and well-balanced on the palate, with good concentration and plenty of volume. Despite a substantial quantity of tannin, it remains smooth and rich, with excellent balance between substance, density and freshness. The texture is delicate and precise. The finish is very long and complex with fresh red fruit, liquorice and cinnamon, as well as more terroir-induced notes of smoke and flint. Whole grapes are fermented at 28°C in smallwooden vats with extraction by manual punching down. The wine is aged for 18 months in barrels (60% are new barrels produced in our in-house cooperage). After being racked a single time, wine is aged according to its profile.

Serving recommendations

Serve at 16-18 °C with red meat stew with black plums, roast beef and veal, roast lamb, medium hard cheeses.

About brand

Château Smith Haut Lafitte is currently one of Pessac-Léognan’s most successful wineries. Despite a long history of 800 years, this farm was not famous for its extremely high quality wine, but that changed when it was purchased in 1990 by Daniel and Florence Cathiard. Former ski champions and sports shop owners have relentlessly begun to renovate and modernize the winery, which now boasts a multi-stage grape picking system (grapes are selected both by hand and with an optical sorter), an in-house ripening workshop and a state-of-the-art winery. Fermentation of the wine takes place in 30 different fermentation tanks. In the vineyards, work is also carried out to achieve the highest quality - the harvest is hand-picked only and the grapes are grown and cared for in accordance with the principles of ecology and biodynamic viticulture. All these investments did not go in vain - since 2000, the quality of both white and red wine wines has started to improve incredibly.
