The Douro Valley is one of Portugal’s oldest and most prestigious wine regions, located in the country’s northeast along the winding Douro River, which cuts through a mountainous landscape lined with terraced vineyards. It is the world’s first officially demarcated and protected wine region – its boundaries were established as early as 1756. The climate here is contrasting: hot, dry summers and cool winters, with the river and rugged terrain creating diverse microclimates. The soils are predominantly schist and granite, forcing the vines to drive their roots deep to extract minerals that give the wines structure and longevity.
The Douro Valley is world-famous for its Port wine – rich, sweet, and long-aged, with a reputation that spans the globe. In recent decades, the region has also gained recognition for its high-quality dry reds made from indigenous grape varieties such as 'Touriga Nacional', 'Tinta Roriz' (Tempranillo), and 'Touriga Franca'. These reds are known for their deep color, aromas of dark berries, and firm structure, while the whites offer freshness along with floral and stone fruit notes.
