Description

Abbott Claim Orientate Pinot Noir 2018 is a concentrated, structured, energetic Yamhill-Carlton ‘Pinot Noir’ from Abbott Claim Vineyard in Savannah Ridge. This vineyard is established on shallow, fractured, well-drained oceanic sandstone soils that help maintain tension and a clear terroir character.

The wine unfolds in layers on the palate: wild cherries, blackberries, coniferous nuances, rhubarb and cranberry freshness, and subtler chamomile tea and earthy notes appear alongside them.

The wine is firm, tight-bodied, with energetic, persistent tannins. The texture remains precise and tense, so this wine benefits from a little air in the glass or even decanting to fully open up its aromatic and structural layering.

The character of the wine is enhanced by its Yamhill-Carlton origin. This AVA is known for some of the oldest soils in the Willamette Valley—large-grained, ancient marine sediments that drain quickly. The region’s warmer mesoclimate often results in wines that are textural, spicy, with darker fruitiness and floral notes.

Abbott Claim’s winemaking relies on native yeasts and mixed fermentation in wood, concrete, and steel tanks, aiming for expression of place rather than effect.

Serving recommendations

Serve at 16-18 °C with grilled meat, cheeses.

Wine Enthusiast

Native yeasts and mixed ferments in wood, concrete and steel are hallmarks here. This tightly woven small-barrel selection opens with rhubarb, cranberry and strawberry leaves, then breathes into pure cherry fruit with accents of chamomile tea. It's a wine you will surely want to decant to give it maximum opportunity to expand.

About brand

Abbott Claim vineyards, nestled in Oregon’s Willamette Valley, hold more than 170 years of history. Back in 1855, this land was acquired by New Yorker John F. Abbott – a farmer and visionary whose legacy endured through centuries of change. Though the land was later abandoned, today it is experiencing a renaissance, thanks to Antony Beck, who has restored the original estate and breathed new life into it.

Antony – a passionate curator, collector, and advocate of natural cycles – cultivates Abbott Claim with deep respect for the soil and surrounding landscape. The vineyard is defined by ancient sedimentary soils, rich biodiversity, and a carefully nurtured ecosystem. This is not only a place of harmony with nature but a philosophical commitment: the vineyard is a symbol of partnership with the Earth, and the wine tells its story.

Wine Style

Abbott Claim’s winemaking philosophy centers on terroir expression, natural vinification, and long-term quality. The result is expressive, harmoniously balanced wines that capture the distinctive character of the Willamette Valley.

  • White wines, made mostly from ‘Chardonnay’, offer fresh acidity, delicate citrus and white flower aromas, with a creamy texture and minerality from extended lees contact.

  • Red wines, led by ‘Pinot Noir’, are defined by elegance and silky tannins, layered with red berry fruit, spice, and forest floor notes. When mature, these wines show remarkable balance between juiciness and structure.

Prestigious Vineyards

Abbott Claim stands out for its unique geographic location in the Willamette Valley – considered one of the world’s premier regions for ‘Pinot Noir’. The soils are predominantly sedimentary, particularly marine siltstone, which imparts depth and finesse to the wines.

In addition to the estate’s own vineyard, Abbott Claim collaborates with selected biodynamic growers, ensuring top-quality grapes for each bottling.

Aging and Drinking Window

Abbott Claim wines are delightful upon release – their freshness, balance, and aromatic vibrancy shine in youth. However, they are also crafted for aging: over time, they develop greater complexity, maturity, and structural refinement.

Aging typically takes place in French oak barrels, with only a small percentage being new oak. This approach preserves the purity of the terroir and lends just a subtle touch of wood to the final expression.
