Read moreTraveling through the surroundings of Alba, one can observe how different grape varieties share the local terroir. The finest, sunniest slopes are reserved for the noble Nebbiolo (such as Nebbiolo d'Alba DOC), which yields a structured, age-worthy red wine. Slightly lower elevations are planted with Barbera, providing the beverage with juicy cherry fruitiness and vibrant acidity. For everyday enjoyment, winemakers often turn to Dolcetto grapes, known for their soft tannins and dark berry aromas.
Piedmont is famous not only for its wine but also for its rich gastronomy, particularly white truffles. Barbera d'Alba, with its expressive acidity, pairs perfectly with pizza, pasta with meat ragù, or aged cheeses. The structured Nebbiolo d'Alba is a classic wine for meat, beautifully complementing beef steaks or game stews. This is a highly gastronomic Italian wine that will turn any dinner into a small celebration.
How does Nebbiolo d'Alba differ from Barolo or Barbaresco?
While all of these are made from 100% Nebbiolo grapes in the same Langhe area, the rules for Nebbiolo d'Alba are somewhat more flexible. This wine is generally released younger, is slightly lighter, more fruit-forward, and reveals its subtle aromas much sooner.
What is the aging potential of Alba red wines?
Dolcetto and Barbera d'Alba are best enjoyed within their first 3 to 5 years. However, a high-quality Nebbiolo d'Alba can mature gracefully in the cellar for 5 to 10 years, developing notes of earth, leather, and dried roses.
What is the recommended serving temperature?
It is recommended to serve Alba red wines at around 16–18 °C. The lighter Dolcetto can be chilled slightly further, down to about 15 °C.
