Read moreWhile the Côte Chalonnaise does not have Grand Cru vineyards like its northern Burgundy neighbors, it boasts an abundance of excellent Premier Cru sites. The limestone and clay soils here are very similar to those of the Côte d'Or, meaning the wines retain classic Burgundian structure, crisp acidity, and a clear reflection of terroir. The primary difference is that these wines typically mature faster, becoming approachable and open within just a few years of the harvest, saving you a decades-long wait.

The white wines from this region are wonderful culinary companions. They pair ideally with roasted poultry, rich fish, shellfish, and soft goat or cow's milk cheeses. The red Pinot Noir perfectly complements roast duck, veal stews, mushroom risotto, and traditional French pâtés.
Most Village-level wines from this zone are crafted to be enjoyed within their first 3 to 5 years. However, Premier Cru level reds from Mercurey or Givry can successfully evolve in a wine cellar for 5 to 10 years.
Usually, decanting is not required, especially for younger wines. Simply opening the bottle and letting it breathe in a large Pinot Noir glass is sufficient to allow the delicate berry aromas to unfold.
