Great Southern is the largest and one of the coolest wine regions in Western Australia. In stark contrast to the hot inland zones, this appellation is famous for exceptionally elegant, age-worthy, and mineral-driven wines. The crisp white wines and structured reds born here are the perfect choice for those seeking a refined Australian style.

Unique Great Southern terroir

Great Southern is a gigantic region encompassing five distinct subregions, yet they are all united by a maritime, cool climate shaped by the harsh Southern Ocean. Vineyards here are often situated at higher elevations on ancient granite and gravel soils. Cool nights extend the ripening season, ensuring that the local Australian wines are characterized not by high alcohol or viscosity, but by exceptional aromatic purity, elegance, and very vibrant natural acidity.

Dominant grape varieties and flavors

Thanks to the cool climate, both white and red grapes thrive in the region:

What to pair with these wines?

Refreshing acidity and minerality make these wines excellent food partners. Riesling pairs perfectly with spicy Asian dishes (sushi, Thai curries) and fresh oysters. Due to their elegant structure, the red Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon will beautifully complement lamb roasts, duck with plum sauce, and hard aged cheeses.

What makes Great Southern Riesling stand out?

It is one of the world's best examples of dry Riesling, often compared to Europe's finest. It stands out for its incredible longevity—due to exceptionally high natural acidity, the best bottles can be successfully aged in a cellar for 10 to 20 years.

Do wines from this region require decanting?

Young red wines (especially Cabernet Sauvignon) are recommended to be decanted for at least 30–60 minutes. Oxygen helps the wine open up its subtle spice and berry aromas and softens the tannic structure.

How long can Great Southern red wines be cellared?

The cool climate ensures an excellent balance of acidity and tannins, meaning high-class red wines from this zone possess fantastic aging potential. Under proper conditions, they can be stored for 10–15 years.
