Hemel-En-Aarde (which translates from Afrikaans as "Heaven and Earth") is one of the most exceptional and highly regarded wine appellations in South Africa, located in the Walker Bay region. This cool-climate coastal area is globally famous for its Burgundian-style masterpieces: elegant Pinot Noir red wine and complex, crisp Chardonnay.
Read moreWhile much of South Africa is known for its hot and dry climate, the Hemel-En-Aarde Valley is a striking exception. Located close to the coast, the region is constantly cooled by the freezing Benguela Current of the Atlantic Ocean and a brisk wind known as the "Cape Doctor." This cooling effect slows down the ripening process, allowing the grapes to develop complex aromas without losing their crisp, natural acidity. The unique clay and shale soils (known as Bokkeveld shale) impart exceptional minerality and structure to the wines.
Thanks to their vibrant acidity and medium body, these wines are exceptionally food-friendly. The elegant Chardonnay pairs flawlessly with roasted poultry, richer fish (like salmon), or buttery sauces. The Pinot Noir is a classic partner for duck, veal, seared tuna steaks, and dishes featuring wild mushrooms. These wines also pair beautifully with gourmet wine snacks or fresh goat cheese.
Thanks to their naturally high acidity and high-quality tannins, the best Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from this region boast excellent aging potential. Stored correctly, they can evolve beautifully in the cellar for 5 to 10 years.
Yes. Due to microclimate and soil variations, the appellation is divided into three distinct Wards: Hemel-En-Aarde Valley, Upper Hemel-En-Aarde Valley, and Hemel-En-Aarde Ridge. Each zone brings unique nuances to the wine, but they are all united by a common thread of elegance and minerality.
