Old Vines and Soils of the Itata Valley

Unlike the hot central valleys of Chile, the Itata region enjoys the proximity of the ocean and a cooler, more humid microclimate. The greatest treasure of this region is the ancient, dry-farmed (unirrigated) País, Cinsault, and Muscat of Alexandria vines, whose roots plunge deep into granite and quartz soils. This imparts exceptional minerality, crisp acidity, and a stunning aromatic bouquet to the wines. Red wines from Cinsault feature soft tannins, aromas of red cherries, wild herbs, and light smoke, while dry white Muscat delights with an intensely floral and stone fruit profile.

Gastronomic Pairings for Your Table

Due to their elegant structure and generally lower alcohol content, Itata wines are incredibly food-friendly:

Why are Itata wines often considered boutique?
Most vineyards in this valley are very small and owned by independent family farmers. Grapes are harvested exclusively by hand from hard-to-reach hillsides, and winemaking often employs traditional, low-intervention methods. Because of this, the production volumes are extremely limited but incredibly authentic.

Are Itata red wines heavy and tannic?
No. On the contrary, these are cool-climate wines. They stand out with a much more delicate texture, higher refreshing acidity, and significantly lower tannin levels than, for example, a Cabernet Sauvignon or Carménère from Chile's central valleys.
