The Terroir of Juliénas

It is believed that the village of Juliénas was named in honor of Julius Caesar, with vines grown here since Roman times. The soil of the appellation is unique, dominated by blue diorite (a volcanic rock), schist, and a bit of granite and clay. This specific soil composition allows the Gamay grapes to develop deeper colors, firmer tannins, and profound fruitiness compared to the lighter southern Beaujolais areas.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it worth aging Juliénas wines?

While they are deliciously fruit-forward when consumed young (1–3 years after the vintage), Juliénas has the structure to evolve successfully in the cellar for 3 to 7 years, where its primary fruit notes will gradually transition into more complex, spicy aromas.

At what temperature should it be served?

Beaujolais Crus are best served slightly cooler than standard full-bodied red wines—around 14–16 °C (57–61 °F). A slight chill beautifully accentuates the natural freshness and berry character of the Gamay grape.
