Loupiac AOC is a small but exceptional appellation in the Bordeaux region of France, famous for its excellent, naturally sweet white wines. Crafted from Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc grapes affected by noble rot, these wines feature an elegant aroma of apricots and honey. It is a wonderful, more attractively priced alternative to the famous, expensive Sauternes wines, perfect for pairing with desserts or cheeses.
Read moreThe village of Loupiac is located on the right bank of the Garonne river, directly across from the famous Barsac and Sauternes appellations. Autumn morning fogs rising from the river, followed by sunny afternoons, create the perfect conditions for Botrytis cinerea (noble rot) to develop. This fungus pierces the grape skins, allowing water to evaporate and naturally concentrating the sugars and aromatics inside the berries. The harvest here is carried out exclusively by hand, berry by berry, to select only the most optimally botrytized grapes.
The primary driver of Loupiac wines is the Sémillon grape (usually comprising about 80% of the blend), which gives the wine a viscous texture, golden color, and notes of beeswax and honey. The complementary Sauvignon Blanc adds a necessary, crisp acidity that prevents the wine from becoming cloying or heavy. Tasting it reveals a bouquet of candied apricots, mangoes, baked apples, figs, and mild spices in the glass.

Geographically, they are separated only by the river, and the production methods and grape varieties are identical. However, Sauternes is historically much more famous. Loupiac wines are generally slightly lighter and not quite as massive as the most powerful Sauternes examples, meaning they can be enjoyed earlier. Most importantly, they offer a much more accessible price for excellent quality.
Due to the extremely high natural sugar content, these Bordeaux wines have phenomenal aging potential. Under proper conditions, they can be successfully stored for 10 to 20 years. Over time, the color deepens to amber, and the aromas transition from fresh fruits to caramel and nuts.
Sweet Loupiac wine must be served well chilled, at around 8–10 °C (46–50 °F), so that its crisp acidity shines through and the beverage does not feel too "heavy".
