The Specifics and Taste of Maranges Wines

The village of Maranges borders the famous Santenay, but due to different soil compositions, the wines born here have their own distinct identity. The soil is predominantly heavy clay and limestone, which imparts a powerful structure to the Pinot Noir grapes. Unlike its softer northern Burgundy neighbors, Maranges wines stand out with firmer, sometimes slightly rustic tannins and a deep color. The glass reveals aromas of dark forest berries (blackberries, blackcurrants), black pepper, licorice, and damp earth. A very small quantity of rare, firmly structured white Chardonnay wines is also produced in the region.

What Food to Pair With?

Due to its pronounced tannins and earthy character, Maranges is a true gastronomic companion that demands hearty food:

Why are Maranges wines often called Burgundy's best discovery?
Located at the very southern tip of the Côte de Beaune, Maranges wines long remained in the shadow of more famous appellations (like Pommard or Volnay). However, they offer authentic, classic Burgundy quality and structure at a much more accessible price.

Should these wines be decanted?
Yes, especially if you are tasting a young (under 5 years old) Maranges wine. Decanting will help soften its naturally firm tannins and open up the complex earthy and berry aromas. The wines also have excellent cellaring potential (from 5 to 10 years).
