The territory of Monção e Melgaço is shielded from the direct influence of the Atlantic Ocean by mountain ranges. Although Alvarinho from Melgaço is delicious when young, it possesses phenomenal aging potential. Under proper conditions in a cellar, these wines can successfully evolve for 5, 10, or even more years, developing richer aromas of honey, toasted nuts, and nectarines.
These white wines are best served chilled to 10–12 °C (50–54 °F). They should not be over-chilled, so as not to mute their complex aromatic bouquet.
