Read moreThe soil of the Nuits-St-Georges region, rich in clay and limestone, imparts exceptional concentration and a firm tannic structure to the Pinot Noir grapes. Unlike its softer northern neighbors, wines from this appellation are more muscular, boasting a deep ruby color. In the glass, they unfold with intense aromas of dark cherries, plums, blackberries, forest floor, and leather. Over time, the wine develops complex notes of truffles, musk, and smoke, while the tannins become silky smooth.
Due to its pronounced structure and powerful flavor profile, this Burgundy wine requires particularly rich food:
Does Nuits-St-Georges AOC only produce red wines?
The vast majority (about 97%) of wines from this appellation are red, made from Pinot Noir grapes. However, the region also produces a very small quantity of rare white wines from Chardonnay or Pinot Blanc varieties.
How long is it recommended to age this wine?
Nuits-St-Georges wines are some of the most age-worthy in Burgundy. Even entry-level wines can age beautifully for 5–10 years, while better vintages easily maintain their structure and evolve elegantly for 15 years or more.
Is it necessary to decant the wine?
Yes, especially if you are tasting a wine younger than 7-8 years. Decanting for at least 1 hour will help soften its powerful tannins and reveal its full aromatic bouquet.
