The influence of a cool climate on Overberg wines

Situated southeast of Cape Town, the Overberg region experiences lower temperatures than the inland parts of the Western Cape. The cold Benguela Current, originating from Antarctic ice, and strong sea breezes constantly cool the vineyards in this area. These conditions are particularly favorable for early-ripening grape varieties, as they help preserve very high natural acidity and crispness, imparting an exceptional elegance to the wines that is reminiscent of the Old World (especially France).

Primary grape varieties

The Overberg terroir is ideal for cool-climate varieties:

Gastronomic pairings

Thanks to their balanced, bright acidity, these South African wines are true gastronomic chameleons. The white Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay are perfect partners for fresh seafood, oysters, and white fish. The elegant Pinot Noir pairs beautifully with roasted duck, salmon steaks, mushroom risotto, and soft, medium-aged cheeses.

How does Overberg differ from the Stellenbosch region?

Stellenbosch is a much hotter, more inland region, meaning its wines are more powerful, fuller-bodied, and dominated by dark berries and firm tannins. Overberg is a cool-climate coastal zone focused on freshness, crisp acidity, subtlety, and elegant Chardonnay and Pinot Noir wines.

Are sparkling wines produced in the Overberg region?

Yes. Because Chardonnay and Pinot Noir (the primary Champagne varieties) thrive in the region, Overberg produces exceptionally high-quality traditional method sparkling wines, known in South Africa as Méthode Cap Classique (MCC).

How should these wines be served correctly?

Serve the white wines well chilled (8–10 °C or 46–50 °F) to highlight their crispness and minerality. Pinot Noir and cool-climate Syrah red wines are also recommended to be served slightly cooler than usual—at around 14–16 °C (57–61 °F).
