Rueda DO is the most famous white wine region in Spain, located in Castile and León. Verdejo – The Queen of Spanish White Wines

The Rueda DO region is situated on a high plateau, where significant temperature fluctuations between day and night help the grapes retain incredibly crisp acidity. The star of the region—the Verdejo grape—yields wines bursting with aromas of limes, grapefruits, melons, fennel, and freshly cut grass. Often, these wines possess a characteristic, subtly bitter almond-like finish that adds elegance. Alongside Verdejo, Sauvignon Blanc is successfully cultivated and sometimes blended to add further aromatic intensity.

What Food Pairs Best with Rueda Wines?

Due to their vibrant acidity and herbaceous aromas, Rueda wines are among the most versatile companions for summer dining:

Are Rueda wines meant for long-term aging?
Generally, no. Classic, stainless steel-fermented Rueda Verdejo is prized for its youthful freshness, so it is best enjoyed within the first 1 to 2 years of the vintage. The exception is wines fermented in oak barrels (Fermentado en Barrica) or aged on the lees (sur lie), which can age gracefully for a longer period.

What is the best serving temperature?
To maintain the crisp acidity and purity of the aromas, Rueda wines should be served well chilled at approximately 8–10 °C.
