The uniqueness of the Sancerre region is defined by its three main soil types: Silex (flint), Terres Blanches (limestone and clay), and Caillottes (stony limestone). This exact soil imparts the famous smoky, wet stone, and gunpowder aromas to the Sauvignon Blanc grapes. The vineyards span the hilly terrain along the Loire River, where a cool climate ensures slow ripening and high natural acidity.
Sancerre is a classic gastronomic partner. The white wine pairs flawlessly with fresh oysters, goat cheese (especially the local Crottin de Chavignol), and various seafood dishes. Enjoy this wine alongside wine snacks or light spring salads.
Most Sancerre wines are designed to be enjoyed young, within 1 to 3 years, to preserve their crisp freshness. However, premium wines grown on Silex soils and aged in oak can evolve beautifully in the cellar for 5 to 10 years.
White and rosé Sancerre wines are best served well chilled, at around 8–10 °C (46–50 °F). Serve the red wines slightly cooler than standard reds—around 14–16 °C (57–61 °F).
