A History Dating Back to the Medici

Although Val d'Arno di Sopra regained its DOC status relatively recently, the quality of its vineyards was recognized as early as 1716, when the Grand Duke of Tuscany, Cosimo III de' Medici, included it in a decree listing the best wine-producing regions. Today, this appellation stands out for its deep commitment to sustainability. Consequently, many bottles produced here are certified organic wine, boasting pure, unadulterated fruit aromas.

A Dynamic Range: From Native to Bordeaux Varieties

Unlike some rigidly regulated Tuscan regions, Val d'Arno di Sopra grants winemakers creative freedom. While the native Sangiovese grape remains crucial, varieties like Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah thrive here as well. Because of this diversity, the region produces complex, modern red wine that pairs perfectly with classic Italian pasta, beef steaks, and aged cheeses.

Are all wines from this appellation red?
No. While red wines make up the vast majority of production, the appellation also permits the production of high-quality white wines, such as those made from Chardonnay or the native Malvasia Bianca Lunga.

How does this region differ from Chianti Classico?
Val d'Arno di Sopra is located further north and east of the Chianti Classico zone. It operates under more flexible production rules, allowing for single-varietal wines (e.g., 100% Merlot) that often resemble prestigious "Super Tuscans."

What is the recommended serving temperature for the reds?
Red wines from this region are best served at around 16–18 °C to fully bring out their rich fruit structure and velvety tannins.
