What makes the Vinho Verde DOC style special?

Although the region also produces red and rosé wines, the Vinho Verde appellation is most famous for its whites. This unique Portuguese wine is typically a blend dominated by indigenous grape varieties such as Alvarinho, Loureiro, and Arinto. Thanks to the cool and humid Atlantic climate, the grapes retain high natural acidity. A traditional hallmark of this wine is a very slight, natural effervescence (petillance) that provides an extra sensation of freshness and liveliness on the palate. In the glass, it usually unfolds with notes of green apple, lime, grapefruit, and white flowers.

Food pairing guidelines

Because of its pronounced freshness and lightness, Vinho Verde is a classic companion to coastal gastronomy. It beautifully highlights delicate flavors and pairs best with:

Does Vinho Verde wine need to be cellared?

No, the vast majority of these wines are crafted to delight with their youthfulness and freshness. They are best consumed within the first 1 to 2 years after the harvest. The only exceptions are higher-tier, single-varietal wines (such as 100% Alvarinho) from specific subregions, which can successfully evolve in the bottle for a few years.

At what temperature should this wine be served?

To reveal its best crisp qualities and slight effervescence, Vinho Verde DOC wines must be served well chilled, at around 8–10 °C (46–50 °F). We recommend keeping the bottle in the refrigerator for at least two hours before serving.

Is it a sparkling wine?

Although standard Vinho Verde contains a touch of carbon dioxide, it is not classified as a sparkling wine (like Champagne or Prosecco). It is a still wine with a very light, "tickling" petillant effect.
