Just like its red counterpart, White Port is born on the steep, terraced vineyards of the Douro Valley. It is made using traditional Portuguese grapes such as Malvasia Fina, Gouveio, and Viosinho. The fermentation process is halted by the addition of neutral grape spirit (brandy), which preserves the desired level of natural sugar and boosts the alcohol content to around 19–20%. The wine is then aged in stainless steel vats for freshness or in oak casks for added depth and complexity.
The White Port DO category offers a wide variety of styles:
A dry White Port served chilled over ice with tonic water and a slice of lemon (the famous Portonic) makes an unbeatable summer aperitif. It pairs wonderfully with salted almonds or olives. Sweet and aged White Ports are best served slightly chilled (10–12 °C) alongside fruit tarts, pastries, or mature cheeses. This fortified wine also makes a highly original gift for any wine enthusiast.
Because it is fortified, Port is much more resistant to oxidation than regular table wine. A bottle of young, dry White Port can last 2 to 4 weeks in the fridge, while sweeter or aged styles can remain excellent for a month or more.
Mostly, yes. However, the sweeter and extensively oak-aged versions serve as magnificent dessert wines, perfect for sipping slowly after a rich meal.
