Niagara Peninsula is Canada's largest vineyard area and the most important wine region in Ontario. It is located along the southern shore of Lake Ontario, with the region's climate strongly influenced by the interaction between the lake and the Niagara Escarpment. Lake Ontario moderates winter cold and summer heat, while air moving from the lake and rising along the escarpment helps regulate temperatures in the vineyards.
The region's terroir is diverse. The Niagara Escarpment runs across the peninsula, creating slopes with different elevations and exposures. Vineyards between the escarpment and Lake Ontario are planted in varied soils, including limestone, clay and glacial deposits. Distance from the lake and vineyard elevation create distinct growing conditions even across relatively small areas.
Niagara Peninsula is officially divided into 10 sub-appellations, each with its own climatic and terroir characteristics. This diversity allows the region to produce wines in different styles, from light, aromatic and fresh wines to fuller-bodied and more structured examples.

The region's cool climate is particularly well suited to 'Riesling', 'Chardonnay', 'Pinot Noir', 'Cabernet Franc' and 'Gamay Noir'. 'Riesling' and 'Chardonnay' retain bright acidity and aromatic precision, while 'Pinot Noir' and 'Cabernet Franc' can show red-fruit character, spice and elegant structure.
Niagara Peninsula is also one of Canada's most important regions for Icewine production. Grapes are left on the vines until they freeze naturally, concentrating their juice. High natural acidity provides a counterbalance to the sweetness and keeps the wines fresh.
The character of Niagara Peninsula wines is shaped by the climatic influence of Lake Ontario, limestone-rich soils, the Niagara Escarpment and the region's cool climate. These conditions are particularly well suited to cool-climate grape varieties and produce wines marked by pronounced acidity, aromatic precision and clear structure.
