Red dry
A Bordeaux wine aged in bottle for more than 20 years, from a terroir owned by Léoville Las Cases. Since 1989, Clos du Marquis has been made from grapes grown in separate vineyard parcels, making it distinct from a conventional second wine. Today, the 2001 vintage offers what lovers of mature Bordeaux look for: developed aromas, retained fruit character and still-present tannic structure.
The nose reveals blackcurrants, black cherries, blackberries, graphite, cedar, tobacco, smoke and liquorice, with earthy and spicy nuances brought by bottle age. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, rich and fresh, with concentrated dark fruit, firm yet mature tannins and good acidity. The finish is long, with lingering notes of fruit, graphite, tobacco and spices.
The Clos du Marquis vineyards are located in Saint-Julien, in the Médoc. Gravelly soils provide good drainage and help Cabernet Sauvignon-based wines retain structure and freshness. At the end of the 2001 growing season, a cool and dry September allowed the tannins to mature slowly.
The wine was aged in oak barrels. After more than two decades in bottle, it is well developed while retaining the structure, acidity and fruit character typical of Saint-Julien. A good choice for those looking for mature Bordeaux that no longer needs extended cellaring.
Serve at 17–18 °C; pair with grilled beef entrecôte, braised lamb, or duck breast with wild mushrooms.
Clos du Marquis is a wine from the Saint-Julien appellation on Bordeaux's Left Bank, produced by the legendary Château Léoville Las Cases estate, owned by the Delon family. The name comes from the "Petit Clos" vineyard surrounding the residence of the Marquis de Las Cases, and the first vintage was released as early as 1902. Although Clos du Marquis is often mistakenly called the second wine of Las Cases, it is in fact a wine in its own right, made from separate vineyard parcels – gravelly Saint-Julien soils bordering the appellation's most famous Grand Cru Classé vineyards.
The blend is based on Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, complemented by Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The grapes are hand-harvested, fermented with extended maceration and aged in oak barrels. Clos du Marquis is a classic Saint-Julien in style: aromas of ripe dark fruit, cedar, tobacco and spice, with elegant tannins, deep structure and long ageing potential. A wonderful way to discover the craftsmanship of Léoville Las Cases at a far more approachable price.
