Description

An organic, vibrant, and fruit-driven red wine from the Languedoc region in southern France, crafted by the biodynamic Domaine Ampelhus estate. Made from ‘Picpoul’, ‘Mourvèdre’, and ‘Grenache’ grapes, this wine perfectly expresses the energy of the Mediterranean climate and the natural purity of the fruit, achieved with minimal intervention.

In the glass, it reveals aromas of ripe raspberries, cherries, blackberries, and plums, accompanied by hints of herbs, pepper, licorice, and a touch of floral nuance. The bouquet is warm, inviting, and rich, yet maintains a fine balance between fruit and spice.

On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, smooth, and harmonious, with soft tannins and balanced acidity. Flavors of red fruits, spices, and a touch of oak unfold into a fresh, mineral-driven finish.

The grapes are grown near Lunel-Viel (Hérault department), on quartzite, sandy, and limestone soils that give the wine lightness, structure, and authentic terroir expression. Fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts, without excessive filtration, and the wine is aged in stainless steel tanks to preserve its freshness and natural fruit character.

Serving recommendations

Serve at: 15–17 °C. Pairs well with: grilled beef, ratatouille, or medium-aged cheeses.

About brand

Domaine Ampelhus is a 12-hectare winery located in the Languedoc region of France. The estate is managed by former Lithuanian pharmacist Ženia Vasiljeva Vermillard and her husband Thibauld Vermillard, who took over the family vineyards in 2015. The producers apply biodynamic winemaking principles and have won the prestigious "Best Young Winemaker of France" award. The assortment is dominated by wines made from traditional and rare historical grape varieties.

Vineyard Characteristics

The vineyards of Domaine Ampelhus are distinguished by specific natural conditions and history:

  • Soil: Dominated by round stones (galets roulés) formed by the Rhône River 400,000 years ago. These stones accumulate the sun's heat and transfer it to the vines.
  • Vine Age: The harvest is gathered from 40 to 70-year-old vines planted by Thibauld's grandfather.
  • Grape Varieties: Alongside classic 'Muscat' or 'Grenache', the estate has revived and cultivates rare historical varieties – 'Piquepoul Noir', 'Terret Noir', and 'Rivairenc'.

Wine Style

The estate's production is focused on naturalness and revealing the true characteristics of the region:

  • White Wine: Stands out for its minerality, full texture, and pure aroma.
  • Red Wine: Features notes of red berries, freshness, and soft tannins.

Due to their well-balanced acidity, the wines can be enjoyed young, but the red wines possess a well-defined structure that allows them to continue maturing gracefully in the bottle.
