Description

Soldera Case Basse Sangiovese Toscana 2021 is one of the most sought-after and most collector-valued Tuscan wines, created at the legendary Case Basse estate near Montalcino. The 2021 vintage is considered exceptional in all of Tuscany, and in Soldera's interpretation, it conveys not only the greatness of the 'Sangiovese' variety, but also Gianfranco Soldera's unique philosophy - wine should not be a creation of man, but of place and nature. The wine is made only from 'Sangiovese' grapes grown in its own vineyards, using natural fermentation and long-term maturation in large Slavonian oak barrels.

The aroma reveals extraordinary layering: cherries, red currants, rose hips, dried roses, licorice roots, cedar, nuances of wet stone and forest floor. Over time, subtle notes of tobacco, leather and Mediterranean herbs open up in the glass.

The wine surprises with its energy and precise structure. Concentrated but not heavy, with exceptional freshness, ripe, very fine tannins and mineral tension. The ripeness of the fruit here is combined with elegance, and the long, salty and aromatic aftertaste lasts for several minutes. This is a wine that already demonstrates extraordinary harmony today, but its true potential will be revealed in the coming decades.

The Case Basse vineyards are located in the southwestern part of Montalcino, at an altitude of about 320 m above sea level. Here, a drier microclimate prevails, abundant sunshine, and the hilly soils of Eocene origin give the wine an exceptional concentration and mineral character. Gianfranco Soldera created an entire biological ecosystem with a botanical garden, rose gardens and beehives, believing that great wine is born only in a living environment.

Fermentation takes place spontaneously, using local yeasts, in large open Slavonian oak vats. The wine is unfiltered and matured in large barrels for about 44 months.

Wine Advocate

Tasted from barrel (botte number 10) at the winery, the Soldera Case Basse 2021 100% Sangiovese is shaping up to be an epic wine from an excellent vintage. It fully embraces the house style with a bright and luminous appearance that folds seamlessly into fresh berry, redcurrant, heritage rose, licorice root and an elegant note of wet slate or lingering petrichor. All of these beautiful varietal tones are wrapped tightly together and emerge with lifted intensity from the glass. I can't wait to taste this wine from bottle, when these various elements have had more time to amalgamate and settle. I also tasted the very punchy and fruit-forward 2022 vintage from barrel as well as the 2023 vintage that was still quite closed. The 2021 growing season saw an important frost event on April 6-7 but otherwise experienced normal spring weather and a hot summer. Harvest started on September 6th. The final blend will be assembled and the wine will go back into botte before going into glass. The actual bottling date will be decided sometime in spring 2025. The 2020s are in bottle at the winery and are expected to stay there for another six to eight months. A release date for the 2020s has not yet been announced.

About brand

The history of the Soldera Case Basse winery began in the early 1970s. Gianfranco and Graziella Soldera nurtured a project to produce a high-quality natural wine and knew they could only achieve this if they found a terroir with certain essential features. When they discovered Case Basse, they knew they had found what they were looking for: an enchanting estate, which lay uncultivated and abandoned at the time. Instinctively realising the potential of the place and bowled over by the beauty of the landscape, Gianfranco and Graziella decided to set up their winery here and planted the first vines between 1972 and 1973, carefully choosing the plots most suitable for growing Sangiovese. It is thanks to the passion, dedication and care they devoted to this land that an extremely high-quality natural wine appreciated all over the world has been produced at Case Basse since the mid-1970s. After Gianfranco Soldera passed away in February 2019, the family continued the business in full respect of the principles and founding values of Case Basse.
