Freisa

1–2 of 2

Freisa' is a red grape variety originating from northern Italy's Piedmont region. Though long somewhat overlooked, this grape is increasingly being rediscovered in a new light, especially among winemakers seeking to create expressive wines full of local identity. Interestingly, 'Freisa' is genetically closely related to the legendary 'Nebbiolo' – both grapes share structure, elegance, and longevity in their style.

A wide range of wine styles is produced from 'Freisa': from slightly sparkling (frizzante), light and fruity, to serious, aged, and tannic. The aromatic spectrum is often dominated by cherry, raspberry, wild strawberry, and violet, while more mature versions reveal notes of spice, leather, and even chocolate. Wines made from 'Freisa' typically have fairly bright acidity and tannins, yet at the same time display a playful character and a distinctive, refreshing style.

Thanks to its structure and fruitiness, 'Freisa' is particularly food-friendly. Lighter-style wines pair beautifully with Italian antipasti, cured hams, roasted vegetables, pizza, or light pasta dishes. More complex, dry, and aged 'Freisa' wines work excellently with roasted poultry, rabbit, or even beef, as well as with cheeses – especially those from the Piedmont region such as "Toma" or "Castelmagno."

Today, 'Freisa' is experiencing a revival – it's attracting interest not only from local winemakers but also from foreign producers and sommeliers seeking an alternative to well-known Italian wines. Thanks to its unique balance between fruitiness and structure, 'Freisa' is becoming an excellent ch
