Wynns J.Riddoch Cabernet Sauvignon Coonawarra 2016

Description

A distinguished wine from Coonawarra, produced only in exceptional vintages from the estate’s finest ‘Cabernet Sauvignon’ grapes. Less than one per cent of Wynns’ total ‘Cabernet Sauvignon’ harvest is selected for this limited-production cuvée. The vineyards are planted in the region’s characteristic red terra rossa soil, formed over limestone, which is considered one of the key factors shaping the distinctive character of Coonawarra wines.

The nose is dominated by blackcurrant, dark berries and mulberry, complemented by notes of eucalyptus, bay leaf, dark chocolate, espresso and cedarwood. The palate is rich and concentrated, yet retains precision and freshness. Layers of ripe fruit are complemented by the subtle creaminess imparted by French oak, while firm, fine-grained tannins shape a long finish with graphite-like mineral nuances. This is a complex wine of restrained power and elegance, with excellent ageing potential.

The 2016 growing season was warmer than average. A warm, dry spring encouraged early flowering and ripening, while cooler ocean currents influenced conditions during the ripening period. The resulting wine displays pronounced fruit concentration, richness and a firm structural framework.

Serving recommendations

Serve at a temperature of 16–18 °C with beef cuts served with red wine sauce, slow-braised beef cheeks, or aged hard cheese.

David Sly (Decanter)

Lots of lean muscle converts into flavour power: pure blackcurrant and chocolate, sage, plum and espresso, all bound in a graphite tannic grip. Coming from a drier vintage, the density of serious fruit weight equates to intensity, and the flavor clarity persists and resonates long after the last note strikes. Think of that final piano chord in The Beatles’ A Day In The Life. Captivating! Drinking Window 2020 - 2050

A smooth, seductive and deeply satisfying Cabernet Sauvignon with a creamy texture but delivering the savoury edge that makes Cabernet such a great food wine. Plenty of chocolate, menthol and eucalyptus notes that make the wine enjoyably polished without being overblown. The tannins are softened at this four year old point, nicely integrated into the black fruits and there is no question it will power through another decade or more at this level. With a history that dates back to 1896, this was the first winery to open in Coonawarra and has been in the Wynn's family since 1951. Drinking Window 2022 - 2042

This is a very impressive and regal cabernet with a rich array of ripe blackcurrants, mulberries and blackberries on offer, as well as a cedary and gently chalky edge. There’s a very rich and powerful core of deep-set fruit, as well as a thread of rich chocolate flavor and a very polished, assertive core of tannin that holds super long. Try from 2022. Screw cap.

About brand

The history of Wynns Coonawarra Estate is closely intertwined with the development of wine culture in the Coonawarra region of South Australia. In 1891, Scottish-born pioneer John Riddoch planted the area’s first vineyards, recognising its potential thanks to its distinctive red terra rossa soil and long, cool grape-ripening season. In 1896, the estate’s distinctive triple-gabled winery was completed, becoming one of the region’s most recognisable architectural landmarks. In 1951, Samuel and David Wynn acquired the vineyards and winery, gave the estate its present name and set about building the reputation of Coonawarra wines.

Wynns became one of the region’s most important producers, helping establish Coonawarra’s reputation on the international wine stage. The estate’s identity is rooted in its close connection to the land: its vineyards lie along a narrow strip of red terra rossa soil formed over limestone. This distinctive soil, the cooling influence of the Southern Ocean and the region’s long growing season help preserve fruit concentration, freshness and structure in the wines. Wynns owns the largest contiguous area of vineyards planted on this distinctive soil, while decades of experience allow the estate to express the character of Coonawarra with consistency.

The winemaking philosophy at Wynns Coonawarra Estate is founded on respect for origin, meticulous vineyard management and a sustained commitment to quality. Generations of viticultural experience are combined with modern knowledge, while vineyard renewal programmes help preserve the health of the vines and reveal the individual characteristics of different plots. The winemaking team places particular emphasis on expressing the character of both the grape variety and the region. As a result, each vintage reflects the conditions of its growing season rather than aiming for a uniform flavour profile.

Although Coonawarra is best known for ‘Cabernet Sauvignon’, the Wynns portfolio also includes ‘Shiraz’, ‘Merlot’, ‘Chardonnay’, ‘Riesling’ and other varieties. Its different collections offer several ways to explore the region, from wines intended for everyday enjoyment to single-vineyard bottlings and prestigious releases produced only in exceptional vintages. Among the estate’s most important wines are Black Label Cabernet Sauvignon, one of Australia’s most recognisable expressions of the variety, and John Riddoch Cabernet Sauvignon, first produced in 1982 in honour of the estate’s founder. Today, the Wynns name is synonymous with Coonawarra’s identity, a long winemaking tradition and the ability to convey the character of the region through fruit concentration, structure, freshness and ageing potential.
