Red dry
Espectacle del Montsant 2021 is an elegant, complex dry red wine from the Montsant DO in Catalonia, Spain. It is crafted from 100% Garnatxa Negra (Grenache) grapes, grown in a steep, century-old vineyard in La Figuera.
The aroma reveals notes of red cherry, raspberry, blood orange, and violet, complemented by hints of white pepper and other spices. On the palate, the wine is silky, fresh, and multi-layered, featuring exceptionally fine-grained tannins and a long, floral finish. The cooler 2021 vintage has endowed the wine with remarkable elegance and a natural sense of freshness.
Production: The hand-harvested grapes are chilled, meticulously sorted, and destemmed. Fermentation and maceration take place in a large French oak vessel for approximately 30 days, after which the wine remains in the same vessel to mature for an additional 14–16 months.
Serve at 16–18 °C. Recommended to pair with roasted duck, lamb, veal, or dishes featuring wild mushrooms.
The 2021 Espectacle del Montsant has a bright ruby color and a very perfumed and elegant nose with no signs of excess ripeness, with 14.5% alcohol. As 2021 was a much cooler year, the wine is more elegant than ever (following the cooler years like 2014), textured and with very fine tannins. It has an intoxicating nose of red fruit and blood orange, violets and a spicy twist with pungent flavors and a finish that is dominated by violet pastille and is pungent, intense, clean and very long. It's multi-layered, precise, nuanced and ever-changing in the glass. It has to be one of the most elegant and finest vintages of Espectacle, with the natural freshness from the year. Bravo! There are some 7,500 bottles of this elixir.
"Espectacle Vins" is a small wine estate located in the Montsant DO appellation of Catalonia, Spain. It is a joint project by René and Isabelle Barbier, Christopher and Charlotte Cannan, and Fernando and Marta Zamora, dedicated to revealing the character of a single, exceptional plot of old vines.
At the heart of the estate lies a vineyard of just 2 hectares near the village of La Figuera, home to Garnacha vines that are over a century old. Situated on a steep slope with clay and limestone soil, the vineyard offers sweeping views of the Montsant mountains, the Ebro Valley, and the distant Pyrenees. This spectacular panorama served as the inspiration for the name "Espectacle."
The vineyard is tended by the team from René Barbier’s "Clos Mogador," while the wine is produced and aged in the nearby town of Falset. The grapes are hand-harvested, meticulously sorted, fermented, and aged in a large French oak vessel.
The estate’s primary focus is "Espectacle del Montsant"—a red wine crafted from 100% Garnacha. With a limited annual production of approximately 5,000 bottles, the focus remains on the depth of flavor provided by these centenarian vines and the unique expression of this specific site.
